Thanks for the fast reply. I took it to a shop and they said heads and head gaskets are ok. I will check the thermostat. Water pump circulates good because I can see it moving water when thermostat...

The needle gets in the red. The transmission gets clunky while shifting at that time until it cools to normal.

with my ranger i get decent mileage with my 3.0. On the interstate the mileage drops dramatically if i drive above 70 mgh.
Is this drop because of engine rpm or friction from air?

Thanks for all the replies. But yes I am aware of the older push rod 4.0 and the newer 4.0 sohc.
I am looking for newer so thought about the 2.3 for mpg

The 2.3 dohc is rated at nearly the same hp as the 3.0 push rod.
How do they compare in real world driving?
