Re: Engine pinging/rattling on acceleration

Good to hear its common I suppose.

Maybe its best to just ride it out then...
I opted to 1/4-can s.foam the vac-line yesterday, with the rest going into a full tank of 87.

Sound like the best...

Re: Engine pinging/rattling on acceleration

I'm guessing the sound of crickets suggests that the audio link I provided wasn't clear enough for any diagnosis.

Admiditly its pretty hard to hear the sound in concern.

Maybe I can reload a...

Re: Engine pinging/rattling on acceleration

Well it took a couple days - and for what its worth, the sound quality isn't all to great (see link @footer).
The recording was made from inside the cab by setting mic of the phone on the passenger...

Re: Engine pinging/rattling on acceleration

Stand corrected; 5W-20 fixes my typing error.

I will post a audio link tonight or tomorrow with a clip of the sounds in question - hopefully to clarify ping vs. chatter, to move forward with...

Re: Engine pinging/rattling on acceleration

It might be a bit late to ask this (just changed my oil yesterday), but would running a thicker viscosity be more ideal for summer heat?

I have always put in 10w-20 synth. based on recommendation...

Re: Engine pinging/rattling on acceleration

The previous responses and unanimous descriptions matching the original post in this tread have been some of the closest I have found to the current problem I am experiencing in my 99' XLT 3.0 Flex...

Re: Cost for Lower Ball Joints? [99 2wd]

Well, it cost a bit more than I had hopped - but the alignment at the 'box box' store was worth it, especially in the long run.

Service is backed by reputable warranty from a long standing company...

Re: Cost for Lower Ball Joints? [99 2wd]

Thanks Rangerlocal.
I will be sure to get a 'window seat' during the alignment.

As far as the loose boots are concerned, I am seriously going to have a go at the mentioned plan (a) after the shop...

Re: Cost for Lower Ball Joints? [99 2wd]

Well after a thorough run through of the local yellow pages, it appears the only accessible alignment shops within a safe driving distance are all big box shops.
Hopefully their work will be...

Re: Cost for Lower Ball Joints? [99 2wd]

Success!
Total time was about 9 hours (split over two days).
Probably could have gone faster, but I didn't not want to rush and miss something. All that's left is a proper alignment and...

Re: Another Tow Question for a 3.0 Ranger

99' 3.0 XLT flex hauled 2100 lbs. of limestone in bed 250 miles no problem.
Surprised how not 'bad' the mileage was too.

Re: Cost for Lower Ball Joints? [99 2wd]

When your poor, 2 cents is a lot - so thank you.
I just hope I can find a shop of that manner in town that does appointments in a couple days or 'walk-ins'.

I got about half way on things...

These responses exemplify why this form is so solid.
I feel like I am sitting down at some pizza shop to hash all this out with ya rather then typing through a computer. Nice.

Re: Cost for Lower Ball Joints? [99 2wd]

Everyone's advice has been a light in the dark, of which I'm highly thankful for.

Unfortunately a lame discovery was made this afternoon.
Apparently when the tire shop nulled the alignment the...

Wow.
Two kick butt responses saying exactly what I needed to know.
Just in the nic- of time too. Parts arrive in a couple days and have to go on immediately.

Thumbs up J8ter, Kyle, and FRF.

Just went with ball-j's and bearings to install with inner/outer rods.

Hopefully accomplishable in one...

Cost for Lower Ball Joints? [99 2wd]

A local branch of an un-named chain tire shop just gave me warning of an ASAP need for new lower ball joints.
