...with sufficient (or, perhaps more than sufficient!) lead time, I might be able to pencil in a meet that close to home... would still take some advance planning to save up for gas, food, room, etc.

I hear ya... but, frankly, my '01 used Ranger payment is one of the smaller bills I pay each month. You're lucky you have a roomie to split the rent/utilities with, that helps quite a bit, because...

You're lucky you don't live in Florida. Single, living alone with no dependents, I'd have to take home less than $14,000/yr to qualify for "minimum assistance" (ie: food stamps). I don't make...
