Re: Digital Tach Recommendation?
The instrument cluster on the older Rangers is modular, so you can remove and replace panels fitted with aftermarket gauges after a little bit of custom work. The entire right-hand panel is the tach,...

Re: Digital Tach Recommendation?
That's alright. I'm not trying to race, I just want to observe my RPM at cruising speeds and at idle. My shifting is completely based on feel.

Digital Tach Recommendation?
The tach in my cluster can't work with the new engine. I want a tach with a digital readout that's not going to break the bank. I was looking on Glowshift's website at one, but some people say to...

Struggling for fuel I think
It feels like my engine is struggling for fuel when I'm on the throttle. I swapped my 2.9 for a 4.0 months ago and I'm theorizing that the fuel pump isn't powerful enough for the new engine. It's not...

Re: 2003 ranger 2.3 5 speed to 4.0 5 speed
If you find a parts truck of the same exact year as yours, you will have the same manual transmission in your truck and the parts truck as well (both should be a Mazda M5OD variant), all you will...

Re: 4x4 problem please help
If you have a manual transmission, you have to be in gear for automatic 4x4 to engage.

Re: Motor swap help asap!
A 1997 Explorer could be either a 4.0 OHV or 4.0 SOHC, and knowing which one is in the truck is very important. If it's the SOHC, it is not plug-and-play. If it's an OHV, the wiring is different from...

Re: 4.0 swap years
Anything is possible. But neither the 3.0 Vulcan or 4.0 SOHC are alike, so you're going to have to swap everything. In my opinion, totally not worth the effort for a slightly better engine. There's...

Re: I am getting 11mpg...
I started using the highway to get around town and got 13mpg on a full tank. Then I took a road trip across the mountains and got 17mpg. I guess I know why I was getting 11.

Hmm, I think you may be onto something with the short distance travel. On a regular basis, I just drive to school and back, which is about 2 miles away. Sometimes I go run errands or visit friends,...

Center Console from Standard Cab B3000
I found a standard cab Mazda at the junkyard with two decent buckets and a factory center console. Is the center console mounted the same way as it is on the Explorer? I'm not going to have time to...

Re: Which engine?
The nice thing about 90s Exploders is that, like any small SUV, poor folks buy them as people movers and sell them cheap when they're all worn out. You just have to lower your standards, because...

Must be region-based. Manual Rangers and Explorers are impossible to find in junkyards up here.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I did some reading up, and apparently they are bulletproof engines. Just don't know if they can pass emissions

Re: I am getting 11mpg...
I had warped heads and a cracked timing cover. Massive compression issues, zero power whatsoever. It was a miracle that it could drive at all. I thought a swap would at least get me better than 13-16...

I am getting 11mpg...
I was getting 13-16 mpg back when I had the 2.9, and I thought that my 4.0 OHV swap would improve things, but I've filled up twice since the swap and have been getting 11 mpg in the city keeping it...

Re: Rear Main Seal/ Oil Pan Gasket
You can do it without pulling the motor, but I'd use a hoist regardless if you can borrow one or something. Harbor Freight sells them for $250 I think. Pulling a 4.0 OHV is not that bad anyway,...

Re: Rear Main Seal/ Oil Pan Gasket
You have to lift the engine. I did both seals on mine, but I had the entire engine out so I don't know how far you need to lift it. 4.0 is not a super big piece, it's the same general size and weight...

I've always thought it would neat to throw a diesel in my truck later on when I have the time. I'm well aware of the Cummins 4bt builds, but have you guys ever seen build threads of the l5 Benz turbo...
