There is a device for sale on amazon called a 'micro bypass'. I have used these several times on Pioneer installs with good results.

Definitely sounds like the fuel pump is junk. I had to do the same thing to get mine to start prior to installing a new pump. To the best of my knowledge you will need the more expensive of the two...

True to point. You can have both, but both will be marginal at best. With these trucks ANY improvement is a plus.

Do a thorough tune-up, look at a decent tuner (I'm working with SCT), maybe try synthetic fluids. I have about the same setup as you do and regularly pull 19+ mpg (not great, but oh well).

Or check the wire harness under the truck (the one under the driver's seat) for corroded pins. I have had this problem twice on my truck.

I had a similar issue with my '01. I couldn't find the fuel pressure schrader valve to check pressure, so I gambled and bought a new fuel pump and viola, starts perfect.
