Sorry, not true.
^^ This. Also, some station pumps are equipped with vapor recovery systems in the nozzle, and as you repeatedly try to top off your tank, they're sucking some of that fuel...

That's why you explode it in a limited access area with choke points and then camp on those kill zones with your light machine guns and/or sniper rifles :)
