That s what I was told by a mechanic that the boot protects the ujoint from elements (salt would probably be worst). Also I guess on mine at least the whole bottom axle needs to be...

The independent mechanic later said that on this model year/generation the lower steering column needs to be replaced (he couldn't replace just the boot), which is actually what the Ford dealership...
