I had sort of similar problem. Went to autozone and got them to plug in their diagnostic reader. It's a free service. It was the throttle position sensor. Easy fix about $30

I have a coiled sprung 2 wheel drive 2.5L 2001 ranger. Both lower ball joints are worn.

My manual says the complete control arm must be replaced yet ball joints for my model are available?

When I had problems I took it to one of the parts stores. They plugged in a gadget to the terminal inside the cab. Got the diagnosis (TPS), changed it and runs well now.

Maybe that might help...

When I got my ranger the transmission fluid was way way high up the dip stick cold.

The dip stick markings say dont ad fluid if level in xxx area when at idle hot.

I'd read that too much fluid...
