Not sure about your codes and the exact situation but have you checked the idle air bypass thing? Its mounted to the air box or intake manifold past the throttle body. I've seen them get plugged up...

Do you know how many miles are on this engine? Usually a backfire is related to timing, either in the valve train or ignition timing. A worn or flat cam can run rough and maybe cause a backfire....
