Won't shift into 3rd when cold...

Greetings fellow Ranger owners. I just started having this problem. When I first start my Ranger in the morning, it won't shift from 2nd to 3rd while it's cold. After driving about a mile it seems...

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

One problem appears to be the temp sending unit. I'm getting it replaced as soon as I can figure out how to get to it. On my early model 1994 Ranger the sensor is behind the belt tensioner in an...

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Ahhh....still very bad MPG. Looks like about 12 MPG. I checked for vacuum leaks and didn't find any.

I'm at wits end. This is getting silly. I may have to revisit my Mass air flow sensor and see...

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Changed out the ACT sensor. the old one was obviously bad. The sensor pin was gone!

Vehicle runs much smoother now and idles like new. Haven't done anything with the coolant temp sensor yet.

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Those sensors are cheap. I'll have to buy them later on.

How can I find out if the coolant temp sensor affects the PCM?

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

That's what I was saying all along. Spent 5 hours changing the thermostat for nothing.

Anyway, maybe the temp gage is bad, or something. Next project is to locate that ACT sensor and on pay day,...

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Everybody says my thermostat is stuck. I still think it's the coolant sensor.

Ok, it took me almost 6 hours to change the silly thermostat. it appears that this truck is an early model 1994(built...

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Still don't know if the thermostat is stuck. In any case, I'll change it tomorrow.

The temp gauge still barely moves.

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Thanks for your help!

I pulled the codes. The only hard code is '113' = ACT Sensor signal is greater than the self test maximum of 4.6v.

Where the heck is the ACT sensor? Can this screw up my...

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Give me some credit. Of course it was the older one. Heck, I don't even think the connector on the new readers will fit.

I might have to test Sea Foam's guarantee.

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Well, did the Seafoam thing in the gas and through a vacuum line. Drove it hard for 5 miles. Smoke went away. Not sure if it did anything. I do know now that I have an exhaust leak in the engine...

Re: What year is my engine?

No, that's the problem. It has the pulley and the tensioner reversed from what it is on the actual engine.

Any ideas where to get belt diagrams

What year is my engine?

I notice the serpentine diagram on the front of the engine is different from the actual engine. The diagram has the tensioner on the left bottom. The engine has it on the left top, where the simple...

Re: Where is the oil going?

Actually, no. He said it was good. I checked it after driving and the dip stick was dry. It was 2 quarts low. I put in 2 quarts. The level is now at the top of the cross hatch area on the dipstick...

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Funny you should mention that. Even though I get good heat from the vents, the Temp gage won't go above 1/8" over *cold*. I'm used to temp needles going at least 1/4 of the way up. In any case. I've...

Re: Where is the oil going?

Oil still holding at *full* after 50 miles. Looks like my friend made a mistake reading the dipstick. He won't admit it, though. lol

Thanks for all the help!!

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Ok. I really appreciate the advice. I've got the CRC MAF cleaner. I figured I could also use it to clean other electronics since I didn't have an electrical contact cleaner. I'll clean the sensor...

Re: New, to me, Ranger 4.0 bad MPG

Ok, calculated my latest trip. 75/6.2 gal = 12 mpg.

That was before this afternoon when I changed plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter. Plugs looked good. Air filter was somewhat dirty, wires...

Where is the oil going?

When purchasing my 1994 Ranger, I had my friend, who used to rebuild engines check out the engine. He says he checked the oil and it was good.

160 miles later, I find that it's low 2 Qts. It's not...
