In case anyone was interested. As the pieces were soft metal and one was found on the gasket surface, and as I was replacing what was most likely the original cork gasket, all signs point to gasket...

Please forgive, don't post much/at all. 02, 4L., auto with overdrive, the large pan trans., think it is the one with more 5's than 4's in the number. Anywho, found 4 little bearing roller looking...
