Also, brake light on dash does not come on briefly at start up unless emergency brake is on. Might be a combination of brake switch and alternator. Volt reading at battery last night while running...

In case anyone was interested. As the pieces were soft metal and one was found on the gasket surface, and as I was replacing what was most likely the original cork gasket, all signs point to gasket...
