Dying water pump, maybe? Perhaps the downshift brings relief by spinning the degraded water pump vanes faster?

Based on my research when looking for a used truck, the Colorado and Canyon were not worth considering. I was looking at Ranger, Tacoma and (maybe) Frontier.

Ford made a functional truck that meets my needs and that I could afford.
Ford made a small, extremely economical 4cyl engine available.
Ford avoided the "upgrade every model year" arms race BS....

When I had an un-airconditioned 1971 VW beetle in the Texas heat I found a spray bottle to mist myself was very helpful.
Probably not a longterm solution for you, but a $2 spraybottle might help...

Texas CHL, so whatever sidearm I am carrying that day. Generally a Taurus PT-111 9mm subcompact. And a spyderco endura. They are so much of my daily carry I feel weird without them.
