Re: Pitted thermostat mounting surface...

I think they do that on some of the newer models. I've seen some housings with only 1 sensor opening. The other is blocked.

Re: Pitted thermostat mounting surface...

RE Sensor/Sender:

The 2 parts may look nearly identical. They should be 2 different colors though. One is a SENSOR, for use by your computer, the other is the SENDER, used for your temp gauge in...

Re: Leaking Thermostat housing

General rule is that you shouldn't use RTV + a seal. I'll look at your thread.

Re: Leaking Thermostat housing

I'm working on an explorer, so photo definitely looks right to me.

The new unit is leaking where the top cover and lower housing come together.

Pull the 3 bolts out in your photo, the cover...

Re: Leaking Thermostat housing

New o ring from Auto Zone leaked worse. I'm ripping all that junk out and taking it back.

I'm actually probably buying a new car. The explorer will become a utility vehicle instead of my daily...

Re: Leaking Thermostat housing

I absolutely cannot get the new housing to stop leaking where the top and bottom connect. I'm waiting for a ride to go to AutoZone since they said maybe the o-ring that came in the kit is not working...

Re: Leaking Thermostat housing

Nothing goes quite right for me, lol. I'll be redoing work tomorrow. For some reason, the replacement housing is leaking. It looks like it's the top part of the housing that's leaking, so at least...

Re: Leaking Thermostat housing

I gotta be honest, taking the intake off was not that bad. If I can do it, anyone can. It gives you SO MUCH more space to work.

There was no way this thing was coming out without removing the...

Re: Leaking Thermostat housing

The other thing I may try too is unplugging and removing each sensor, and unhooking the vacuum line I noticed in my way. That might give me the clearance I need to move the housing out around the...

Re: Leaking Thermostat housing

Well I started this job today, and had to abort part way through. I'm starting to think it was replaced before.

I tried to go the non-intake-removal route, but as I got close to the point of...

Leaking Thermostat housing

2000 Ford Explorer SOHC has a leaking thermostat housing. Shocking right?

Anyway, I'm hoping to take care of it this weekend. Any recommendations for parts? It's my understanding that the dorman...

Howdy,

I have a 2000 Explorer 4.0 SOHC with about 125k on the clock. I was having some issues w/ heat/overheat, and was working on my cooling system today. I decided while I was under the hood,...

Re: bad shake between about 45mph and 80mph

I considered that possibility too. I will give that check next time I get a chance. My front pinion seal is leaking, so there's another breadcrumb. Fluid is up to proper level, but u-joint...

Re: bad shake between about 45mph and 80mph

I'm hoping to get some work done this weekend. Rear axle seal, possibly axle bearings depending on how ambitious I get. Also rear brakes (need to fix axle leak before putting new brakes on), and may...

Re: bad shake between about 45mph and 80mph

there's a couple weights, but are they old? who knows. Maybe the left the old weights on, and got it "close enough" or something.

I hate it when people work on my vehicle. I had 2 separate places...

Re: bad shake between about 45mph and 80mph

Thanks man. I'll be honest, I didn't see them spin the tires on a machine, so I'm wondering if they just used one of those bubble balance things. I'll head back to the tireshop and have them...

Re: bad shake between about 45mph and 80mph

Tires are a Cooper StarFire 340 I believe. I didn't see exactly how they were balanced/runout check.

I don't expect these are spectacular tires, but I really am a bit concerned that I got taken...

Many of you may already be aware of this, but I just wanted to share it again.

I recently had an oil change done on my explorer (4.0 sohc) out of convenience. I was on my way out of town and...
