When I got my 93, 4 of the 6 plugs broke off in a similar manner. I used an easy out and all 4 backed right out without need to pull the head. Total cost $3. I'd sure give it a try before you pull...

98% chance the shift motor is fubar. Easy check...the circuit relay is behind the driver seat. When you press the 4x4 button, this unit should click. If you don't hear a click, then your module is...

You may have lost the bushing on the inside of the shift motor. Without the bushing, the motor can't stop its rotation in the right spot to engage and disengage 4wd.

It is such a PITA to change the covers, you'll only want to pull them once. You have to disassemble the entire intake, move the A/C...its not simple.

Double check all your vacuum lines under the hood. You probably have an intermittent leak.

The small bushing on the surface of the drive wheel inside the tc motor is broken and not stopping where it should.
