Truck burns extra fuel until it is warmed up then it will be OK. Your engine is most efficient at normal engine temps

No experience with the mazda but other manufactures have the glow light flash when one or more glow plugs not working which goes with not starting problem

This is pre OBDII so how did you read the code? Maybe your code reader is wrong

Sorry, I didn't see that you say that you didn't have heat. Yes change the thermostat and use fords thermostat for ease of changing.

The sending unit for the gauge is under the oil filter, you get at it from under the truck. If your gauge doesn't move then check out the gauge first. The sending unit has nothing to do with the...

The one by the thermostat is for the computer and the one under the drivers side by the oil filter is for the guage

Still sounds like spark to me. Have you checked the timing belt to see if it is bad or the tensioner is bad?

I am unfamiliar with the systems of '85 but if it has a distributor you might be too far advance in timing. This would also show up as hard starting.

Is this the reading when the motor isn't running? If so then your meter isn't reading right. You should have 12,5 volt at the most.
