No experience with the mazda but other manufactures have the glow light flash when one or more glow plugs not working which goes with not starting problem

Sorry, I didn't see that you say that you didn't have heat. Yes change the thermostat and use fords thermostat for ease of changing.

The sending unit for the gauge is under the oil filter, you get at it from under the truck. If your gauge doesn't move then check out the gauge first. The sending unit has nothing to do with the...

Still sounds like spark to me. Have you checked the timing belt to see if it is bad or the tensioner is bad?

I am unfamiliar with the systems of '85 but if it has a distributor you might be too far advance in timing. This would also show up as hard starting.
