You could take the valve cover off for a visual inspection. Whatever you find or don't find, you'll have a start on removing the head.

Combustion gases leaking across a leaking gasket will erode aluminum until it ruins a head. Some heads are cheap, some aren't. Are Ranger heads aluminum or cast iron?

If that were true (which I doubt) it is because stainless exhaust parts are fabricated from extremely thin tubing. By the time you have shut off the engine and crawled under the truck it has already...
