this is also true for me too, i drove from San Antonio TX to Bethesda MD and did 60MPH the whole way at just around 2000 RPMs and got 23MPG... it was awesome

rattle sounds like u-joints just check them for slop by shaking driveshaft and if they are loose then you will see the joint move and it might make the noise for you. the whinning could be a trans...

it could also be a intermitant O2 sensor cutting in and out... look at the wires make sure they are not rubbing on anything causing them to ground out.
