Re: My ford Ranger Sho

that is awesome. the yamaha V-6 is an awesome motor. Way more power than the 3.slow vulcan and better mileage too....if you can stand to keep your foot out of it.

Re: Who says the ranger isnt a work truck?

The Ranger is a fine work truck, so long as it is light work. Not saying you can't occasionally punish it with something stupid like a pallet of quickrete. Yeah, I did that once. It was a little...

Re: Would you rather...?

You're comparing apples to handgrenades.

The 2.3 driven conservatively (staying out of the boost) will likely deliver significantly better mileage than the 4.0. Either will deliver shit mileage...

Re: What years should I consider?

Thanks for the replies. Looks like it's 95-97 then.

Since there is no big hurry, I'll probably just wait till I find a '97 ext cab or more likely just drive this thing till a cross member snaps!...

Re: What years should I consider?

A V-8 would be kinda cool, but, I was planning on using my existing drivetrain.

If I want a V-8 toy, it won't be a pickup.

What years should I consider?

I have a 97 ext cab 5 speed, 3.slow. Runs beautifully, but, everything bolted to the frame other than the body is rusted to shit. The frame itself, strangely enough is fine. To make matters worse a...

Re: Downshifting vs. braking

It's what I like about the interwebs. You can be a snide a-hole all you want and not worry about losing any teeth in the process. This place is actually rather tame compared to some boards.

Re: Downshifting vs. braking

It really ought to be more about the terrain than your speed. There are tmes to coast at 70 mph and times to engine brake at 15 mph.

You are in NH. That's a fairly hilly place. If you are going...

Re: Downshifting vs. braking

By float shift, assume you mean the technique of putting pressure on the shifter so that it slides into gear when the revs are matched.

I have done this, but, not sure if it is wise. i would...

Re: Downshifting vs. braking

I'm the hopeless one?

Here is your first post, once again.

Could you point out the part where you said you downshift when appropriate?

Oh yeah, you didn't.

Re: Would you rather...?

As a DD that is primarily on road and not a tow vehicle, the Turbo 4 would likely give you better mileage when you weren't flogging it, so maybe it is a good way to go, if you have access to a...

Re: Would you rather...?

Depends what you want to do.

Street race?

Go with the turbo with the biggest turbo and intercooler you can afford.

Anything else, particularly towing or off road, the low end grunt of the...

Re: Downshifting vs. braking

Double clutching does not save the clutch. Doesn't hurt it either.

It is a practice that dates back to the time before synchronizers when you absolutely had to double clutch on downshift to keep...

Re: Downshifting vs. braking

what you said in your first post...

So wtf is it?

Either you always use your brakes or you engine brake on hills when it makes sense?

Nice job kickin' your own ass!

Re: Where does your loyalty lie

They would last 20 years, if you kept them from rusting out and rebuilt the engine a few times. Car engines from the 50s were generally toast at 70K miles. Today's engines aren't even broken in at...

Re: 3.0 Towing 1,000 lbs

I agree with maritime, you need to check your math. That being said, it'll do the job, but, won't win any races. Of course, being a 3.slow owner, you're used to that! Most importantly remember your...

Re: Where does your loyalty lie

The frame is essentially perfect. Just very light surface rust. Everything else is pretty much rusted through. Ford apparently went with cheap chinese shit for all these parts. So, yeah, I think they...

Disagree with what part?

That ford is loyal back?

that toyota is 2X as good?

I will say this much about a company being loyal back. i have a ton of rusted stuffunder my truck. the frame,...

Re: Downshifting vs. braking

I'll bet you live in a fairly flat part of california. If you are in a hilly area and don't engine brake, you would go through brakes quicker.

Re: Downshifting vs. braking

What ^^^^ said. Heel and toe down shifting is used in racing where you are hard on the brakes going into a turn and need to downshift. Of course, it is getting to be a lost art in racing with the...

Re: Where does your loyalty lie

My loyalties lie with my family, friends and country. If you have any sort of loyalty to Ford or any other maker, you are a chump.

Do you think they are loyal to you?

In my younger days I was...

Re: Downshifting vs. braking

The point is that given the choice between a miniscule amount of clutch wear and a lot of brake wear and the possibility of warping a rotor, it makes sense to go with the tiny bit of clutch wear.
