Overheating

1987 gauge, truck gradually goes up in temp until it reaches the “N” top area near the (NORM) area. Or near the H for Hot. It gets hot at high RPMS (2500-3) but at a red light or idle it’ll cool down...

So my alternator went bad on my 87 2.3 . Got a new one at the parts store, however the new one has a built in regulator instead of a plug out one, so I had to strip the original wires from the truck...

Non-belt squeak.

I have a high chirp-squeak when going off of first and (sometimes) second gear only. The squeak is only there when I first engage off the gears. Although it sounds like a pulley or belt, I ruled that...

Re: 1989 2.9 Ranger - Tensioner Pulley

Usually loosening the bolt by the alternator will push the alternator down >>> loosening the belt

Re: 1987 2.9 won't stay running

This reply is probably really old, but sounds like a pickup coil needs replacement above the distributor. As car runs the coil heats up and fails. I had this exact issue, new coil fixed my truck

Re: 1987 ranger 2.3

If it has stalling problems as well take a look at the pickup coil above distributor

Re: 1987 ranger wont start

Hey I know it’s a bit late, but for a while my 87 had trouble starting and it’d stall... if your stalls as well take a look at the pickup coil above the distributor. Fixed the problem for me.

Willing to spend a couple hundred on a solid tuner, but I don’t know if they make any for a 1987 2.3L ? I can’t find any good name brand tuners for my year. If anyone has a link to refer me to it’d...

Tachometer lag

I got an aftermarket tach installed (equus brand) on 87 ranger bc that year doesn’t have a factory one. It works okay, but it lags e.g; when it should be reading 2,500 rpms it’s barley at 2,000 and...

Re: 2.3L looses spark, just dies

What you should do next time it happens is keep a screw driver or an extra spark plug handy. While cranking the engine check for spark. That’ll narrow down the problem big time

Re: 2.3L looses spark, just dies

This would happen on my 87 2.3 all the time. I had the problem consistently for a while and replaced a couple coils, ignition module , still no difference. Finally when I got the pickup coil replaced...

Re: 1987 dies and won't turn on

SOLVED. New pick up coil inside the distributor did the trick. Just if anyone is having a similar issue , sharing what fixed mine could avoid someone else all the trouble I went through

Straight pipe ??

I have an 87 2.3, and if any of you guys have this model you know just how quiet this thing runs. A little too quiet for my taste. I was wondering on the pros/cons on a straight pipe after the cat...

1987 dies and won't turn on

Long story short I have a 1987 2.3L that dies when I'm driving it at random. It also sometimes dies after it's been sitting out in the parking lot while I'm at work. When I turn the key the engine...
