It's harder than an after-market. It' may involve some good epoxy and a rubber mallet.

To change color, I've seen just using a new dash sticker. And to keep the needles in the same place, I've seen a neat trick using a AA and loose wires. Once the cluster is out, power up the needle...

I agree. I think they are just just there for show. Just try prying off carefully with a screwdriver or interior tool.
