I just did a 2001 and newer (live axle swap) on my 98 4x4. I use 2001 cv shafts and wheel bearing. Everything bolted up and works fine.

Have you replaced the tensioner and idler pulley? I have used parts from all parts store (Napa, autozone, advanced, oriely's, peps, and standard auto) with only one alternator failing after a year.
