In my case it was electronic. It was fixed by removing a bad aftermarket chip plugged into the ECM. It also happened using an ECM from a ranger that was manual trans. and likely had no electronics to...

Just wanted to add this so maybe someone might avoid changing drive train parts unnecessarily. My 99 2.5 auto trans 2wd banged hard in reverse sometimes and hard in D or when manually shifting to 2...

tried another pump relay when it did it again, little or no change

switched computer with 97 2.3 right when it was doing it, different part numbers, immediately ran great and no engine light....

I have a 99 ranger 4 cyl. I use a 97 for parts, a 96 sorta for parts but worth fixing up, a 92 3.0 I think with not much wrong.
On the 99 I've had a problem where often after driving 20-45 min....
