Sounds like you are referring to a manual transmission with a clutch. The above threads are referencing a 5 speed automatic transmission, however, the drain/fill plug should be located on the side...

02 Ranger slow to shift from 1st to 2nd
I have an 02 Ranger with an automatic transmission. At normal driving, it shifts OK. But, if I need speed, fast, it feels like it is hung in 1st gear until I let off the accelerator. Then it shifts...

Don't matter how old. its still good info. I'm having a similar problem. Have to let up on the gas to shift to second. Where is this shift silonoid located on the tranny? internal or external? ...
