Re: 2019 ranger pricing finalized info inside.p

I am very disappoint. The pricing is more-or-less what I expected, but the options here leave a lot to be desired. No regular cab option? And it seems the minimum wheel size is 16" now? I was looking...

Re: what is a good cat back exhaust system for my 2.3l?

I've got the Gibson split-rear dual exhaust on mine. Had to fight to get it to fit since I have a regular cab, but the end result was absolutely worth it. Still impressed at how good it sounds.

Re: 2.3l dohv cam question

I'm starting to suspect you might just have a minor exhaust leak. At one point on mine, I didn't have the catalytic converter assembly properly connected to the exhaust manifold. It looked OK and...

Re: 2.3l dohv cam question

Ordinarily, yes. However, this engine is actually infamous for valvetrain noises. It's probably the #1 complaint about it. I've heard that several dealerships turn people away for it just because...

Re: 2.3l dohv cam question

The tappets themselves are sized differently for the application. You need to do a clearance check between the tappet and back of the lobe, compare it to spec (I forget what it is), and then find an...

Re: 2010 2.3 random high idle.

Yes, those. Although I'm pretty sure they're nylon, not plastic.

Re: 2010 2.3 random high idle.

Yes, that's the intake manifold. The big hose is probably running straight to the brake booster (big cylinder thing at the top of the firewall that has the master cylinder sticking out of it). The...

Re: 2010 2.3 random high idle.

Vacuum leaks are a pain because of exactly the reason you described. Most techs/mechanics/pros/people-with-way-too-much-money-for-their-own-good use smoke machines to find them. Pump the system full...

Re: Duratec cooling mods -- Need to clear CEL

In my case, I just happened to have a load resistor from a set of LED turn signals I'd purchased a while back. Since I did the actual proper hyperflash fix of installing an electronic flasher relay,...

Re: Duratec cooling mods -- Need to clear CEL

My understanding here is that the engine is so efficient that it can't heat itself up fast enough unless that thermostat is sealed shut. But since a mechanical thermostat doesn't open immediately,...

Re: Duratec cooling mods -- Need to clear CEL

I have no power door locks either. Or power windows. Or power mirrors (that one REALLY annoys me though, so I might mod that). The GEM seems to really live up to the GENERIC part of its name, so it's...

Re: 2010 2.3 random high idle.

While the engine is running, unplug the IAC valve. If it immediately stalls out or the idle drops to a dangerously low RPM, the valve is fine. Don't bother with it. Your problem lies elsewhere, and...

Re: 2010 2.3 random high idle.

Just follow all of the hoses coming from the intake manifold. One of them is bound to have rotted away. But a likely culprit would be the smaller line going to the purge valve near the battery. I...

Re: Duratec cooling mods -- Need to clear CEL

Those diagrams really do mirror another one of my bigger annoyances with this engine: why the hell is the coolant tank on the passenger side of the engine bay? It would've been far easier to design...

Re: Duratec cooling mods -- Need to clear CEL

This motor was designed specifically for use in smaller cars. That's all there is to it. Ford's adaptation to the light truck simply relied on doing everything possible to maximize low-end power (the...

Re: Duratec cooling mods -- Need to clear CEL

I'm starting to think the P0500 in the GEM is just a glitch. Yes, my speed & odometer are both fine. In fact, I abused the hell out of my cruise control the other day, and it worked flawlessly. If...

Re: 2.3L (05) Small Issues

Yes, the '05 is a 2.3L Mazda L "Duratec" NS engine with DOHC. It was introduced in 2001, but the design evolved significantly over the years. For example, my '03 is technically the same engine, but...

Re: Duratec cooling mods -- Need to clear CEL

No, the automatic's sensors are all located on the transmission case itself. This one is the differential speed sensor, which is supposed to be the ABS sensor for the rear wheels. It's pretty easy to...

Re: Duratec cooling mods -- Need to clear CEL

Just discovered something new and interesting. First off, I fixed the fuel leak. It was just the engine-side quick connect on the fuel filter. The retaining clip was stuck, so it wasn't springing...

Re: Duratec cooling mods -- Need to clear CEL

Oh dear. My little thread has gotten quite busy lately, hasn't it?

Sadly, I haven't done too much experimentation with this. Just keeping an eye on general performance and stuff. I will state with...

Re: 2.3L (05) Small Issues

The oil light/gauge is not showing an issue with the oil level. It's reading the oil pressure. Just because you're low on oil doesn't mean you don't have adequate pressure. Of course, it's just the...

Re: Ticking sound

Intake manifold runner valves. '01–'03 4cyl Rangers are notorious for that noise. Basically, the plastic bushings that the runner valves rotate on have disintegrated. This makes them clack back and...

Re: #2-cylinder miss fire

Swap the two coil packs and see if that fixes it. Alternatively, swap spark plugs around to see if the problem follows the plug. You may even be able to move the wires if distance permits.

Re: We need your help

Check the vacuum lines at the IMRC control. It's supposed to have one coming from the intake manifold, and another routing to the actuator behind the manifold. The valves are open by default, so a...

Re: 07 Ranger Slight Delay When Shifting From Reverse to Drive

Aren't the servos themselves on the other side of the case? I thought the passenger side was the adjustment bolts/lock nuts for the bands. Although those are also possible leak points.
