IMHO, if you have the ability to do a very clean fab job, I would go with the first idea inside the grill.. Done up right, I think they would look a lot cleaner and more like they were 'supposed' to...

Sounds like either the oil is not the proper weight, or it is old broken down oil and once it's up to operating temps, it's thinning out too much and not making it up to fully lubricate the lifters...

Cussed it out... finally got my axle spindle bearing and wheel bearings/seals replaced as well as the hub/rotor assembly on the passenger side... started on the drivers side, cussed it out some...
