Default 2001 XLT "Shadow" (redo)

This is my second attempt at a build thread. The first one simply had too many pictures and would just crash computers when it was clicked on. So I'm going to try again but with less pictures up front haha

Day 1:

Black 2001 XLT Supercab, 2WD, Auto, 3.0. All stock. My gf at the time was into the whole naming cars thing and so I decided to go with Shadow. She hated the truck and hated the name and I guess it was out of spite that I kept the name, and then it just kinda grew on me. And for anyone wondering, its not just because of the black; I named it after the dog from Homeward Bound

It was very clean and ran great. Picked it up for $4500. Cool thing is that the truck was built in NJ, shipped and sold in Florida, then made its way back to PA where it was sold in an auction to the guy I bought it from, back in NJ.

ANYWHO onto the mods! I'll offer up a list and then just show some progress pictures during the life of the truck so the thread doesn't crash anyone's computer lol

Since getting the truck I have:
- replaced chrome grille with honeycomb
- Powerdome Hood
- 3" blocks and AAL in rear
- 2" coil spacers in front (REMOVED SEPT '13; DESTROYED UPPER BALL JOINTS!)
- 3" Doetsche Spindles
- Fender Flares from an 02 FX4
- installed a Rhino Rack on the cap
- cut valence to install KC foglights
- installed a Lund Moonvisor
- replaced stock hood with a powerdome
- Replaced dome light with Mustang one
- throttle cable mod
- airbox mod
- Bucket Seat Mod; after cutting I covered the seats with custom seat covers from ProSeatCovers dot com. They are HEATED SEATS as well
- Custom switch panel in dash
- Custom skull/crossed swords ovals
- Vise mount on tailgate
- put a flagpole on the roof rack. It sounds dumb, but I never have to remember where I parked at a crowded venue. Just raise the Coca Cola flag before heading out lol
- Painted bumpers black
- 15 x 8 Crager Soft 8's (Black)
- 31x10.5 Firestone Destination AT's
- Full size spare
Maintenance
- Replaced engine with a jasper rebuilt 4/13
- Opted for the install kit so new plugs, wires, belts, hoses, fuel filter, air filter, PCV valve, water pump
- Replaced all shocks; Bilsteins in the rear and Monroe's up front
- Replaced the rear hangers/shackles
- Replaced radiator
- Replaced tie rod ends
- Replaced upper control arms and ball joints (passenger side replaced again thanks to coil spacer)
- Replaced lower ball joints
- Replaced front wheel bearings
- Rear drums rebuilt (parking brake cable would not disengage; when the mechanic popped the cover the pieces just fell out :O )

Electrical mods:
- Installed a Sony head unit
- completed the BIG THREE mod: Optima Yellowtop battery, 250A Alternator, and 1/0g wire
- Two sets of LED lights in the cap. One is auto when glass opens and one is manual (with color remote)
- Set of speakers in cap with 3.5mm aux input
- Bed mounted 12v outlet
- 2 AUX fuse boxes; one under hood and one in center console
- 400W power outlet mounted in center console
- dual USB power outlet mounted in center console
- standard 12v outlet mounted in center console
- green LED-backlit cupholders in center console
- Auto-down passenger window mod
- Under door light mod
- 2x 100W spotlights on bumper
- 2x 55W worklights on rear of cap
- 2x 55W aux reverse lights under rear bumper
- 2x 55W fog lamps mounted on side of roof rack ("alley lights")
- made my own LED tail light bar
- Installed an electronic Tailgate lock
- mounted a 19" TV in the cap

GEAR
- Installed 2 Husky tool chests on the inside of the bed
- installed shelving inside the roof of the cap
- built a backseat storage box with drawers
- Put way too much stuff in my truck haha (I have a list somewere if anyone is interested in exactly what kind of stuff I drive around with)

OK now that you've skipped the words, on to the pictures

First time off-roading. Here its got the new grille, roof rack, fog lights, and Lund Visor mounted

I later added cross bars and a fairing to the roof rack. The fairing opens to store my straps in it.

Custom ovals I machined up after failing to do the "paint oval mod"

Most of the mods in the past year have been electrical. Here's the BIG 3 being done, along with tearing my cab apart to run accessory wiring for everything I'm planning

The relay bank under the hood to run everything. In progress picture, its usually loomed and tidy.

Here's the cab storage box. Looks about the same today except the front of the drawers have diamond plate on them

Bed gear

And most recently I've been working on building my custom center console with all the above mentioned electronic crap.
Here's the model from SolidWorks, I need to get a picture of the current state. Its done being built and just needs plastidip!

And in case you were wondering why I had the engine replaced...

Hydrolocked it and shot a rod right through the oil pan lol
Lowest point of my truck.

I have a ton more pictures of the stuff I just don't want to put it all up in the first post. If you have any questions about anything feel free to ask and I'll post it up!

And here's the most recent photo. Doesn't have the powerdome yet; this was during the road trip to get that part lol

Soon to come:
- install the fender flares that are sitting in my yard
- Spindle lift
- 31x10.5 Destination ATs
- New rims (the 8-hole pattern wheels)

And then I'll be broke for a while lol

YES! Your computer didn't crash!

YES!! Your ipod crashed! I put a secret kill protocol in the thread to disrupt ipods
And thanks, I plan on keeping the truck forever and hopefully one day it will actually BE a 4x4. With a bigger engine and such. But that's all pipe dreams for now.

Anywho, some more photos of work I did today!

For one, I finally got my powerdome installed last Friday and got a picture of it on the truck!

Also added some grab handles a few weeks back

And here's those Alley Lights

And here's the current stage of the center console. It still needs plastidip and a new USB outlet but other than that its pretty much done.

Today's work consisted of installing the center console storage compartment light that turns on when you open the lid. But when I pulled my box out I realized I had a lot more lights in there then I remember. So I started thinking about where to put them because, lets face it, the dome light just doesn't cut it sometimes.
I decided to place a strip just forward of the visors so they are not visible to the vehicle occupants but it still illuminates the cab, specifically the area in your lap which is usually in shadows from the dome light. I also placed a small strip down in the foot well to help out when I drop things down there and to see the aux fuse box during nighttime.

(the storage compartment floor is absent in this picture. Normally those wires are not showing)

Just the dome light:

With the map light:

And finally, the green backlit cupholders I've been trying to do for like a year!

Tomorrow I'll install the passenger side lights woo hoo!

This is a great build man. I really like the idea of lighting in the cap. I just spent the weekend in mine and that's one thing I wish I had. Thinking about a 3 way switch so I could turn it on off from the tail gate or inside closer to the cab if I was sleeping inside.

Haha yea the lights are fantastic for camping and such. It was my first real mod to the truck and its evolved from an LED strip running off a AA battery pack to a nice setup with multiple lights and switches all running off truck power. At the moment there are two LED strips:

The first is a plain white "Cargo Light". Following the circuit, it begins as a hot wire in the cab, where it goes through a toggle switch in the cab, runs to the rear switch box through another toggle, then out to a mercury switch on the glass, and then into an on/off delay relay.
The two toggles are essentially "override" switches to shut off the lights when I don't need them but normally they are always in the 'on' position. Normal operation is opening the glass, which triggers the mercury switch and automatically turns the lights on. The on/off delay relay forces the circuit to wait 2 seconds before turning the light on. That way it doesn't flicker when the mercury switch gets jolted by bumpy roads.

The second set of lights are the "Interior Lights". These operate off of a 3-way "hallway" switch like you were describing. Theres a switch in the cab and one in the bed switch box. When I was shopping for another strand of LED's I saw they had color lights on ebay and I figured what the hell lol. They came with a remote to change between regular white and all kinds of colors, as well as the ability to dim and brighten the lights. Red is perfect for camping!

bed switch box:

Cargo Lights:

Remote for colors and the different choices lol

Nah, it was silver when I bought it. I attempted to paint it myself but it wasn't happening so I took it to maaco and they painted it for about 200 bucks. I went with the base/clearcoat paint job and it doesn't look too bad. Its not a show truck or a sports car so as long as it was black I was happy lol

That's so awesome. I just did a really shotty 3 way switch with a few landscape lights I picked up for 6 bucks each. Nothing near as cool as your build. I wish mine looked this good. Definitely TOTM worthy.

Hey man if it works its not bad! Sure beats no lights.
And you just gotta keep working at it. My first setup was crappy, I had a switch in the cab and a wire going out the back window to a box in the bed that had a 8-pack of AA batteries in it to power the LED's. They had about a half hour of life before they dimmed out haha

And thanks! Don't know if its TOTM material yet with the half finished lift and undersized wheels but I appreciate the compliment!

No pictures today, but I have been busy! First off I'm about ready to start actually finishing my center console. Spent all day today cutting the wires and installing disconnects and a terminal block so it can be removed. Tomorrow I will start with the wood filling, masking, and preperation for plasti-dipping as well as some carpet trimming

Also just order my spindles! I've been putting them for so long, and I need new tires. So I decided to splurge and orer the spindles now. Next paycheck I'll order my wheels, and then the following check is the tires and installation!

Then with the new big tires I will be able to install my fender flares. Very excited about the upcoming month haha

I don't even know whats up with all the broken pictures and stuff and I don't care enough at the moment to fix them. If it says theres no thumbnail to display I think it still works if you click on it.

ANYWHO, it has been a busy month for me! I spent way too much money but I've accepted the fact that this truck IS the Aluminum Falcon. Heavily Modified, but at the cost of constant maintenance. Everytime I would get close to lifting it, something would always always ALWAYS fucking break. Bought the truck, saved some money and BOOM went the entire front end suspension. Replaced all the joints and stuff. tax return came in this year and BOOM goes the engine. Got a little bit of cash and sprung for the wheels, the NEXT DAY my fan clutch went BOOM. $200. Ordered the spindles and my rear output shaft seal starts leaking again. And my oil gauge flips around the wrong way. Its just frustrating sometimes ya know?

So when I last left off, I had ordered my spindles. Since then I have:

Painted my bumpers black!

Finished painting the frame (rust primer here, I did a coat of black
Rustoleum later)

And most importantly, I FINALLY LIFTED MY TRUCK. My buddy from work came over last week and helped me install the spindles!! I broke one of the ABS sensors and ground the A-arm and spindle and everything seemed to work fine! Had some trouble with the power steering pump (turning the wheel without engine running = spilled fluid and unhappy pump lol). Also went ahead and replaced my passenger Upper control arm since the rubber boot on the ball joint was shredded. Learned my lesson that coil spacers are BAD.

Took the truck to my local mechanic and had him finish up the work. Removed those spacers, checked my brakes (turns out my rear passenger drum exploded lol), installed my new 31x10.5 Firestone Destination AT's, and aligned everything up nice!

I'll have to get out and do a photoshoot one day soon but I was busy testing the new tires! (I got the truck back Friday evening and went out Saturday morning haha

These tires KICK ASS. I was out wheelin with that same work buddy, and I kept up with him and his Jeep all day, down every trail, up every hill, through every puddle and mud hole...got stuck 3 times and 2 of those times I was able to rock myself out. He stayed in 2WD most of the time but he's got a locker in his diff. Mine is OPEN. Mud, sugar sand, sandy hill climbs...and Shadow just motored on through like nothing. Really impressed with this truck and what a difference the lift and tread makes!

Congrats man! Glad to see you finally got it lifted. Your gonna love the tires. My first full set of tires I ever bought were the stock size destinations for this truck. They did all the beach going, trails, mud, snow, camping, rain, and everyday driving with no problems. They are rated for 50,000 miles and I got 65,000 out of mine. My new set are 31.5/10.5/16 and I'm loving this set just as much.

P.s. gotta get the pictures fixed. Can't see a damn thing

Thanks! Finally got it lifted, only took about 2 years haha
When I bought the truck it had a set of the Destination LE tires (225's) and for being a street tire they impressed me off the road, which is why I stuck with a destination tire for an AT. Plus they had great reviews online, nicely priced, and when I went to look at the store the tread looked plenty deep. After yesterday's excursion I'm sold! Always glad to hear another personal testimony tho

Yes I know I need to fix them....I use imageshack and it used to work fine but now if I insert a picture its like mega-sized on the page and every other format of link just doesn't work ugh

In other news, I washed the truck today and installed my fender flares! Kinda wanna get it dirty again because the amount of scratches and dents from yesterday is horrendous. Especially in black haha
