Default 1990 2.3 5spd

Hello my name is Jason and I am new to the Ranger community. I have inherited a 1990 Ranger 2.3 5spd. It has been sitting for some years now and from what I was told it has leaks. I am planning on using the truck to pull a small trailer (6x9) and mower(walk behind) also as my everyday driver. My grandfather and I always talked about doing a swap for a 5.0. But in all reality I don't know if that is reasonable at this time considering my budget and gas prices. So I am thinking of going with the 4.0. But not knowing what all this will involve I am trying to see what some experienced people would recommend so maybe I can save myself a headache. Which year 4.0 is best for this application? Will I need tranny as well? Thanks in advance!

Welcome. I would hold off on the engine swap until you've gotten used to the truck. The 2.3 ain't so bad, and gets better mpg than the 4.0. Take care of all the other stuff first (LEAKS) and brakes and suspension and such. A truck that's been sitting will take some loving care to get through the first year.

I learned how to drive a 5spd on this truck and love it. I just don't know if the motor is built to be pulling anything. So why put money into it if im just going to tear it up ya know. I just figured it would be less wear and tear on the 4.0. And my money well spent. Idk
