Got the gas tank skid installed.

I'm usually not big on stickers but I really liked this one:

I started building a platform to go inside my camper shell for this summer. I've wanted to build something like this for a while now but since I only keep the shell installed in the summer for camping, I really just wanted a bare-bones, simple design that won't take up much space and is easy to remove and store in the winter.

I think this design is going to work out pretty well. There's just over one foot of storage space underneath which should fit all of my camping gear and still leave just enough space to sleep comfortably on top. Getting in and out of it might be a bit tricky but I think it'll work.

I still need to buy a piece to go across the top but I'm waiting until the shell is installed. I should have it finished in a week and I'll get to try it out the following weekend. I'll post up pics of the finished product and if anyone takes interest, I could post the measurements in a how-to.

All four corners will be supported by the boards that rest on the grooves of the factory bed liner. The board on the bottom just slides in and locks in to the center support pillars using joist hangers. The very center pillar is attached to the bottom board and will slide in to a joist hanger on the top piece once it's done:

The boards that run across the top of the bed had to be hinged in order to get them to fit inside and sit on the grooves of the bed liner. You can just make out the hinges in this pic:

Here's a pic of it disassembled. There are two identical units of the piece near the top of the pic that install first and the piece that the cat's sniffing just slides in after the other two are installed. I may add more to the bottom piece if it ends up needing more support but I'm going to try it out like this first as I really just want the bare minimum. My only fear is that the stuff stored underneath may slide around and disturb the boards but that could be easily fixed by adding a couple more boards running across the bottom of the bed:

If it doesn't work out, I'll have some extra fire wood at the end of the summer.

Got the platform finished today and wound up using an ikea mattress. It's a little tricky to get in and out of but once you're inside it's just as comfy as a bed and there's plenty of room to roll over.

How are the 32's with 4:10's. Im looking at 32's but will probably get 31's for a little more get up and go.

Also curious on this! They do look good though! Any issues with rubbing? Did you just get factory length shocks?

Hey guys. Sorry for the late response. Haven't been on here much lately. The 32 are fine with the 4:10s. I didn't notice a big difference in power. They do rub a little even with the torsion bars cranked and I have to be even more careful about the rear tires rubbing on the fenders off road since there's more travel in the rear end. Had to crank the torsion bars some but I kept the stock length shocks. The biggest issue is that I replaced my lower control arms a while back and the new ones make the truck sit a little lower in the front so now they're rubbing like crazy. I may need to go back and re index the drivers side t-bar to get a little more clearance. If I could go back, I'd probably get 31s for the extra clearance, but the 32s look pretty good and the rubbing wasn't bad before I changed out the LCAs.

Did you get your new tires yet? If so, what size did you get?

Sorry. I'd love to help out but I didn't save the measurements and I got rid of the shell and the boards because there was too much condensation to sleep in there. Probably would be better if I had a carpeted shell.

Anyway, if you have the factory bed liner, there are some notches where you can put 2x4 across the bed. Just measure the distance across there for both of the two notch areas, then measure the distance from the bottom of the bed to the notch in the bed liner (where the 2x4s fit to go across). Subtract 2 inches from that so that the other 2x4 will fit under it (the one that goes in the middle down the length of the bed). If you want more room underneath for storage, just add that to your second measurement (the one you just subtracted the 2 inches from). If you do that, make sure to also take that extra distance and multiply it by 8 and add that to your total so that you can add pieces under the boards that go across to lift them up a bit. For the board that goes in the middle down the length of the bed, I'm pretty sure it was just under 6ft. You might want to mesure to make sure. Once I had it cut, I put everything in and just marked the long board so I'd know where to attach the joist hangers. I cut all of my boards a little long, then shaved off a little at a time until they fit just right. For the surface, just measure the distance between the clamps for your camper shell, then subtract 2 or 3 inches and cut it, then you can put the surface board on top and slide it in and just mark it where you need to cut it to fit inside the tailgate. Hope that helps some.
