Default Caseywoods5's 1990 Ranger Custom 4X4 2.9L V6 trail rig (need ideas)

hey i recently got a 1990 ford ranger custom 4x4 2.9 v6 with an auto tranny with like new p235/75r15 goodyear wrangler all terrain tires on it. it had sat for 10 years. i drug it out, went through the tranny (new seals, gaskets, filter, fluid change), did oil/filter change, air filter change. it starts and runs like a brand new truck without even a single sound in the engine, and it has 300k miles! the bed was ate up terribly, so i took the bed off, just running cab, front fenders, hood, grill, lights. i got a bunch of tubing and plan to make a frame so a tube bed and later on getting some diamondplate to cover it. found a bad spot in the frame, welding it and plating it up this weekend. i removed the rear sway bar and it flexes great, can't remove front due to not enough room for travel within fenders. wanting to lift it some, but need ideas. i found a 2" lift (2" coil spacers and a AAL) for $100, is it worth it? should i go for something else? i've never messed with AAL's. my 96 ranger has 4" rc suspension lift and 3" body lift, would like something similar but lower in cost. i'd be willing to do a body lift but would like a little more suspension travel too. if i did the 2" coil spacers and AAL with a 3" body lift that'd probably have it sitting good, but would it be good enough for the trails? i've also been looking at winches. wanting to slowly go all out on this truck. any ideas would be appreciated, pics to come soon! thanks in advance guys! looking forward to this build!

pics up!!! first 2 are after a ride to the end of jeep holler (EVERYBODY said it would never make it and it would get stuck, NEVER got stuck the first time). third is a pic of it flexing! 4th and 5th pics are of it cleaned up. the front fenders are now pushed in, the only pic here of when they were pushed in is the pic where it was flexing and you can't tell it much there.

nice man that looks good! and that's with just the 2" coil spacer in front? nothing in the rear? do you think i should throw on a 3" body lift too since they're only about $100-150?

Ive read somewhere that coil spring spacers are kind of iffy. Idk ive never tried spacers though. I would go with body lift and coil spring spacer im hoping to install 3" body lift on my 1999 and maybe 2" spacer and add a leaf for 5 inch lift? Anyways whatever u do im sure it will look great.

my 96 ranger has a 4 inch rough country suspension lift then a 3 inch body lift for 7 inches total, it's my avatar pic. this white one i was thinking along the lines of you guys, i want the 2 inch coil spacers up front then a 3 inch body lift so it sits good, going to be working on making that tube bed soon. want to get the frame of the bed made and then bedline the tubing, then get some diamondplate and lay down on that tubing, i think it'll look great when i get done!

thanks man! sorry it took me so long to get back on here and reply i've been out of town for a week.

----------

i've done some research and found that jeep cj5 rear leaf springs are 2.5" wide, same as a ranger, but they're shorter and will raise my rear end up higher, so as soon as funds are available i'm getting new leaf spring hangers, shackles, cj5 leaf springs, and going to move my hangers forward while also moving the rear one farther forward to accept the shorter cj5 leaf springs. after moving them forward and getting everything lined up, i'm going to shorten the frame. it should be significantly shorter, i've already had a look at my driveshaft and it will shorten a few inches so i plan to only move them forward enough so i can still use my stock driveshaft. i've got big plans for this build, but it may take a while as it'll be a budget build so i'll have to do it as i get the spare funds. i'll try and keep you guys updated!

----------

ALSO, i won't be making the tube bed for it until i have moved the rear end forward and shortened the frame, so that will come a little later on but it will be done. as much as i wish i could do all this right now, as i said earlier, i will have to take it slow and do it as the cash comes.

okay guys, the one thing that slipped my mind, what should i do about shock mounts when moving the rear end forward? i'll need something new or to move the mounts, ideas needed on how to go about that!

just got a chance to look at the shock mounts closer over the weekend, they are bolt on and not welded on so they'll be easy to move. everything's looking good so as soon as i get the funds for the parts it'll have that shortened wheelbase! still debating on it but pretty sure i'm going to shorten it.

okay guys i'm kind of torn here. thought really hard about it and realized, if i shorten the wheelbase, and turn this into an all out trail rig, then eventually wouldn't i need a longer wheelbase to handle it? i think i'll end up needing the wheelbase where it's at later on so i think i'll leave it how it sits and work on the other stuff. it needs new leaf spring hangers and shackles, then it'll be ready to raise some hell. so thinking i'll get to work on that bed here soon. just got lots of ideas going through my head and trying to figure out what ideas to use and what order to do some of this in. is it hard to convert over to a 4 link suspension? i have no experience with them but they look wicked and the extra travel would be nice.
