Default 2004 Ranger XLT project log, need some help!!

Alright so I picked up a 04 about a week ago knowing it was going to need some work. I finally had a chance to look into it today. When I picked it up I was told it doesn't run anymore and that it just bogged down and shut off on him. I got to where it was to pick it up and the battery was completely toasted to I didn't have a chance to fire her up to check it out. So today I got home and started looking into it. I noticed that the second plug wire and plug on the drivers side were removed and I noticed some what appears to be something like a scotch bright pad coming out of the spark plug hole. (pictures at the bottom) So I pulled it all out which btw it was a pita to get it all out. Then I pulled the toasted battery out and put a fresh one in. Then I put the plug back in and connected the wire. Got in the truck and started to crank her, took a about 40 seconds to get her to fire up but she did. I heard what appeared to me to be a lifter knock of some sort. She ran rough for a little bit then somewhat cleared out but still felt like she was missing, I was giving it some gas to try and figure out where exactly the knock/tick was coming from. It sure did feel like it was only running on a few cylinders(under power). I went to goose it a little more and then it just shut down. I went to re fire her and she would just crank, only tried twice.

I have an idea of what may be wrong but I'm just trying to get a few more opinions from you guys. (head blew up)

The truck has about 160,000 on the ticker and is a 4.0 SOHC.

Pull the engine out and do a rebuild. Like said above, there are too many things that can be wrong. Like what you did, you fix one thing and another goes wrong.

Pull the engine, break it down and clean it. May need the heads re-worked. My opinion? Get another engine with less miles and do a rebuild on it and put it in.

Then you can rebuild the old one and possible sale or keep as a backup.

This is perfect for a 5.0 swap.

Got it running again, it was idling by itself and once again after about a minute it shut off. Pulled the dipstick out and boom, coolant in the oil! so now it's time to start pulling her apart. I'm not in any type of rush and I'm going to take my sweet old time on it. I will keep updating you guys and feel free to give feed back! Can't wait to make this thing a beast!

Getting ready to start pulling the motor, I have been scouting local yards for a running 5.oh expo to drop in her.
