Default 1990 Ford Ranger Restoration Project

I decided to make a log to help organize what I need to do and what I have done. Also if any of you are interested feel free to offer any advise as to what you think I should do on what ever part I am tackling whenever.

problems that need fixing as of right now
-floor pan hole
-body rust and holes
-fuel pump and sending unit(I may need a new tank entirely
-paint job
-needs car radio
-exhaust pipes
-tailgate doesn't like opening

So lets start off with body work and the floor pan. As of right now the body is in poor condition with several rust spots and holes including a major hole in the floor pan, and a bunch of smaller holes around the body.

Floor Pan Problem

an underside view of the rust hole in the floor pan.

as you can see the rust extends basically from the gas pedal all the way to behind the bench seat.

the best advice I have found on this problem is to get a plot of sheet metal to cover past 1" of the edges of the hole and weld it in place what do you guys think of this idea?

Body Rust

There are a lot of holes and rust around the body of the car. Most of them are small and I can probably use a little bondo patching, what do you guys think of that idea? And for the rust spots that are mostly cosmetic I can sand down the spot and spray over it with some rust stopper. For the bed of the truck I'm thinking of sanding it down, using primer as an anti rust and top it off with a spray on liner. I'll probably replace the tailgate unless you guys think it's worth saving.

passenger side wheel well rust hole

driver side rear rust damage (I'm not even sure what I should do with this)

please let me know what you think of my ideas and help would be appreciated

I'd buy a replacement bed and tailgate.

Yeah, that is A LOT of work, especially the body work. The Rust you can see is probably only 30% of what you can't see. I don't know if it's actually worth your time and money to fix it rather than finding a better condition truck. If that's not an option, go to the junk yard and replace the truck piece by piece. It will cost less, and you can't paint the pieces as you get them.

She's kinda rough. It looks like more work than I'd be willing to do on it.

yeah I just also noticed that some of the frame work is rusted to the point that I just might have to buy another car, I'm just not sure what to do about it, I' m thinking of that donor car idea though.

Update: I realized that it wasn't the frame that's rusted it's just the radiator support. Also I just bought a 2 foot cherry bomb glasspack cheap off of a friend, still need to get the exhaust pipe it self though

Why not shop for a better starting project from a dryer climate?

it comes down to the whole "options are for people with money" problem. I can't really save up money because I don't have a steady enough income so I bought this cheap and am buying parts here and there. Also I do like the idea of being able to say " I practically rebuilt that car". Over all, most of the work I can do myself so it's not like I'm paying out of pocket for labor I just have to buy the parts.

It's a labor of love for a reason, more power to ya! You could get something newer with less work, but you already have something. Just tackle all the mechanical stuff first, like oil leaks or anything that affects the reliability of the truck. If its not reliable or doesn't run, it's not worth fixing anything else.

yeah I planned on starting with the biggest two things, the floor and the fuel pump/unit but I'm also knocking out the things I can get cheap like the car radio and muffler I got for a total of $25 from a friend it's looking like a doable project now that I found the biggest things and have gotten estimates on the prices. the engine runs, my friend had it going on some starter fluid but not long since there's no fuel getting to the engine. basically I have to replace all of the "wear and tear" parts, brake pads, wipers, shocks etc.

thanks man... I have a problem with the radio and I'm hoping that someone here can help me. I got an original radio from my friends 1991 mustang, I hooked up the wire harness and antenna up and it seems to match. I get signal and I get full light control through the dash lights control but there is no sound coming out of either of the two speakers on the door, it's unlikely that both speakers are blown but I guess it's possible what do you guys think?

If you haven't pulled the door panels off and looked at the speakers, could just be loose wires.

sent from my phone to outer space and back!
