Out of curiousity, why didn't you have insurance help with the hail damage? It sounds like you went the pocketbook way.

My Ranger had about 9,000 miles on it and I tried doing the proper thing on the freeway by staying 500 feet behind a construction vehicle. I went to pass, and as I was parallel with him, there was a dip in the road that we both hit at the same time. It wasn't a pebble, but a frickin boulder about the size of at least a softball that literally bounced off my windshield. I am so thankful that it didn't roll down my hood, and I kept my fingers crossed that my windshield would be O.K. Not two days later, right at eye level it shattered leaving a line from the top left where an oil change sticker goes to almost the middle center. I had no choice but to replace it, and with a $500 deductible, it was all out-of-pocket. My new windshield cost me $250, and guess what? Three years later, I have to replace the replacement because I had something else pelt the windshield. I think it was from a trash truck this time.

Always wondered why we have to secure our cargo, yet dump trucks, trash trucks, and others don't? They aren't even required to put a full tarp on, which would prevent a lot of drivers from being in dangerous situations let alone save money from all the windshields having to be replaced.

on a side note, the roll-off trucks here have to have a tarp over the bin to prevent this from happening and depending on what the dump truck has(gravel, rock, cement chunks, etc) some must be tarped aswell
