Takes about half an hour to swap the tires, but I got them mounted on a different set of wheels. Most of that time is spent driving to the barn to grab them, lol.

Well, I got both the lights working on the grille guard yesterday. Ended up being a bad ground on the drivers side light housing, so I just ran a wire to a spot behind the grille. Also moved my antenna to the tool box. Not huge stuff, but meh, it's something, lol.

Well, I tore the Ranger apart again.

First, my fucking oil leak. I've been staring at this truck now for the last half hour or so trying to think of where it's coming from, going under it, going above it, and I don't know! It's a big leak, as the truck ran for less then 5 minutes, and there's a fairly good sized puddle starting to form on my garage floor as we speak (maybe 2 inch by 2 inch as of right now, which to me is more then I want). I tore the upper intake off for two reasons (the second being the second topic I'll talk about) and figured it would be easier to see the back side of the lower intake manifold with it off to check for a leak there, and nothing. There is old oil leak residue which I think came from either it or the valve covers prior to me buying the truck but nothing new, and with a swipe of my hand it comes back with grease rather then new oil. Looking at the bottom (underneath the truck) it seems to be coming from between the engine and the transmission, but the oil spray goes beyond the middle of the transmission and the oil pan with small drops forming all along, which makes it harder to diagnose. I am guessing it's the damn rear main seal, and since I just bought one I'll go ahead and replace it and see what happens. Otherwise, I will drop another $80 on a lower intake manifold gasket and pray to God that is where it's coming from.

Secondly, after reviewing another persons project log (sorry if you read this but I am too lazy to link the thread and I can't remember your username) I noticed both of his fuel lines were on the drivers side of the engine. One of mine went to the passenger side and the other went under the upper intake, so of course I had to investigate. When it was torn apart, this is what I found instead:

The "bump" (which looks line a fuel line connection) closest to the camera looks as if it is capped off from the factory and has no role in the mechanical operation of the truck, however it is the same location as the other posters fuel line went. I do have another connection on the other side of the engine where it was connected before I tore it apart again, so I know that is where it goes (or at least that is what I am saying, but being a fucking idiot, it could go anywhere). I'm not too concerned though since the truck runs with it hooked there, so I am guessing that's the location.

Third, I figured out my truck was converted to R134 refrigerant in May of 2001 (thanks service shop for putting a tag on the condensor, lol) which makes me happy. Now I just have to have it recharged!

Fourth, it has nothing to do with the mechanics of the Ranger, but I found two things in the interior that I never noticed before. One, my seats have a front cushion type deal that can be adjusted forward, which I never knew, lol. Two, there are rear entry/exit levers for people in the back to let themselves out. I can't believe I didn't notice these before, which is pretty sad since I've owned the truck since 2007 now, lol.

And Finally, I think I might need new throttle cables. When I put my foot down on the gas, the highest the RPM's go up to is about 2500 RPMs while driving, but I will check to see how far the throttle body is actually opening tomorrow. I already did the throttle cable mod and would rather not have 1,000 zip ties under my dash, lol.

So, that's my small update. Should have the motor put back together in the AM, but it'll stay in the garage until probably Sunday when I will change that rear main out. I'll have my old man help me out, along with Chiltons, lol. I switched the tires around on the Chevy so I can drive it (well, secretly it's but I'll pretend like I'm suffering, lol).

So my dad and I spent about 6.5 hours tearing the transmission out of the Ranger today to replace the rear main. The seal was definitely my oil leak problem, as the connection between transmission and engine had probably a quarter of a quart of oil sloshing around inside waiting to escape. We put the new seal in, but decided to hold off on putting the tranny back in since it was such a bitch pulling out, and we need to regroup, lol. We'll be putting it back in probably Thursday since we should both have the day off.

Wish I had the time to go pick up all the parts for a 5 speed swap, but I think it'll make a good winter project, lol.

my fuel lines are in the same spots as yours .. when you asked if they were both on the drivers side I thought you meant were they come form the fuel tank to the motor .. they both come down the drivers side frame rail into the engine compartment. they then turn into braided lines witch go to the fuel rail.. I looked at some of my pics and can see were you were confused .. the line that goes to the passenger side of the fuel rail connects to the fuel pressure regulator and I had to run it threw the upper intake to get it there thats why its not connected in the pics with the upper intake off ..

Ok, cool. Thanks for that.

Well I still have an oil leak after changing the rear main seal and fudging with my lower intake manifold gasket. I think it's still coming from the latter of the two, so I am just gonna quit being cheap and order a new one on Monday.

My next "project" is making some racks for my topper. I took a picture of the Ranger in it's uglified state:

I would buy a set of nice ones, but I don't want to put them on this shitty old topper. I won't be leaving the topper on all the time (just when I want to go camping or kayaking), so I'll probably just use some 2X4 lumber I got lying around along with some bolts and stuff. It won't be pretty, but it will be functional for hauling gear up top. Eventually, I would like to get a fiberglass topper (I've been checking CL every day with no finds as of yet) with some nice cross bars and a basket, but that will be later on down the road.

I might start working on it tomorrow, or I might not. Depends on how I feel. I haven't gone fishing enough this year so the project might be put on hold, lol.

Oh, and you can't see it in my crappy walk by picture, but I changed the location of my CB antenna once again (not installed, just have the mount installed). I found my old Alon mount lying int he bottom of my tool box, so I installed it on my grille guard. I probably won't hook it up for a while though because nobody around here talks on them, and I kinda think it looks dorky on a stock height truck.

The truck lives again!

Been awhile....so here's a quick update (I apologize in advance for language and plain old fashioned lazyness in this post). Oil pouring out of the truck; fixed with a new intake manifold gasket. Found a bad leak from the transmission line next to the oil pan due to it rubbing against the later; fixed with some rubber hose and hose clamps. Ground wire for tail lights is corroded due to a shitty job installing the trailer plug (oh yeah, I did that!); going to fix at work shop. Transmission slips from 2nd to 3rd gear unless I let off the pedal before it actually shifts....can't quite figure that out, but run it untill it splodes, then swap in 5 speed manual. Bed banged up from a year or so doing construction, have most of it covered with ugly ass tan bed liner; going to go over bed liner with black bed liner, lol. Check engine light is on; don't give a fuck.

I'll be taking it to the shop soon to change the oil and fix that wiring issue, then it'll be going to a tire shop I deal with for some front end work. I have enough saved to do a 6 inch suspension lift, and thinking I may pull the trigger, then at same shop use my credit to get some plain wheels with some Cooper tires. Hoping that will help kill the transmission soon so I can do the 5 speed swap this winter, then wheel the crap out of it on weekends next summer.

As far as life goes: still working for the propane business, but moved into fuels and heating oil delivery. It is a lot busier in the summer and I have been putting in roughly 12-14 hour days 5-6 days a week, depending on if I am on call or not. The pay checks have been nice, but I am ready to do some outdoor activities now that school started back up for the youngin's and people have stopped touring around my damn back yard. Moving in October to my parents rental house which will get me out of this fucking hell hole. Obviously spent my full weekend off working on the Ranger since I got sick of looking at it sit. Got a little Subaru that I still have yet to drive for a commuter car, but meh, it'll probably sit for a few years before I decide to drive it, lol. It actually runs, I just haven't put the title in my name and I am too lazy.

Anyway, pics to come this weekend. Was going to go after work and get some, but once again, I got lazy and felt like coming home and going face deep in a double bacon cheeseburger. Waking up early tomorrow to do a short day, then running around getting shit done, Ranger related and not. So to tide you over:

Crappy cell pic:

And of the real money pit:

Latest done to Betty White: 1.5" zone BL, Hypertech eco tune netting me 18 MPG with 50% city 50% highway, went back to my sport mirrors (not in picture), brush guard, CB, custom made bed in the bed, and probably a handful of other things you guys don't care about

UPDATE: Went to take the Ranger down to our shop to change the oil Yesterday when my speedo dropped down to 0 while I was accelerating from a stop, and my transmission would not shift into overdrive. Whipped a uey, and drug the truck home by the ears, did a quick google search and figured out my VSS is probably shot. Amongst all my errands I ran yesterday (after climbing back in the Chevy), I picked up a new one and will probably install it this weekend (most likely Monday, since I think I am going camping). Then we will make the 25 mile trek back to the shop, HOPEFULLY with Overdrive, lol. Other than that and a leak coming from my seal on the steering components down below (It's the thing that the other thing attaches to as far as I'm concerned, but the guy at our shop called it something else, lol), the truck is leak free and running "good", lol.

QUESTION: My Air Conditioning pump has a plug with a cut end on one end, and I have no idea where it is supposed to plug into. Anybody know the route the plug actually takes for the AC on these old OHV's? The end that plugs to the pump is there, but it attaches to the plugs for my fuel injectors with some clip, goes another 8 inches and then dies at a cut off end. Would be nice to get that going now that summer is almost over and I could really use it in the hot ass days of winter in Montana....oh wait! BTW, thinking I may recharge the AC with some #2 dyed diesel. I heard you could use propane

On a side note, I filled the Ranger up just before all of the above occured...21 MPG's. I find that hard to believe, so I will have to check it again after a few other fill ups.

UPDATE: Replaced the VSS today. The old one exploded inside it's housing! Came out in a bunch of small pieces, which made it a real pain in the ass to replace. The gearing that goes into the housing though was still in good shape. Took about half an hour to replace mostly because the damn cotter pin wouldn't budge, so I cheapted and just clipped the plastic retainers around the old sensor away after fighting with it for about 20 minutes, lol. Also fixed my tail lights so they both work full time now, except for my hazards.....but since I hopefully won't need them anyway, I'll worry about that later.

Next project is to get some front end work done on it. Then after that I'll start looking at suspension upgrades and some wheels/tires.

UPDATE: So on Saturday I took the Ranger up to town to run some errands and seeing as how it only went 160 some miles on 3/4's of a tank of fuel, I decided to check out the mileage....12.74 MPG! The transmission seems to be my culprit, considering that even with it in overdrive, it is running at 2500 RPMs at 60 MPH (when it used to be around that at 70). I have a couple of things I want to finish on my Chevy before I do the next project to this bitch, but I will be hunting down a 5 speed and 5 speed accessories out of one of the yards here soon.

A question I asked earlier in this thread, and not sure if anybody will see it again: When swapping to a manual transmission, do I need a different length drive shaft?

Anyway, that's all I got. As far as the engine, it is running absolutely great! I need to start working on the AC issue as well as replace the plug for my MAF sensor (currently duct taped to the sensor due to laziness), but other than that it seems to be back!

Depends on the trans you swap in. measure what you are swapping in, compared to what you are removing, then you will know
