There's an outside?

I was thinking about it earlier while I was sitting on my couch naked playing video games, and sorta remember somebody telling me I had to convert the AC to some other shit. Like I said, I'll call around and figure out what I gotta do. First things first, I gotta get the bitch going, lol.

I think the only reason I mentioned the AC is because it's supposed to be almost 90 degrees tomorrow. I so wish the garage had AC, lol.

Lol you have to probably convert from old school R-12 to new school R-134a, its more environmentally friendly, and won't kill you if you accidentally cut the lines. The regulation in most states and jurisdictions is that vehicles older then 1996 or so when R-134a came as the standard do not need to be converted. I know this is the reg back home. I'd try and find that out and if you can stick with R-12. When you convert an R-12 to R-134a the system will leak down over time unless you spend the STUPID amount of money for all of the R-134a parts. THe molecules in 134 are smaller then that of 12. R-12 is no longer available made new, so you have to find a place that still has a stock of R-12 to get this done. A recharge is like 150 bucks, compared to a retrofit that can be up to 1500 bucks.

Well, I made some progress today. I got the drivers side head back on (not torqued yet) along with the manifold sorta bolted to it (have two more bolts to put in, but they are in a hard to reach spot and I was getting frustrated, so I moved to another task). I then got my intake all gasketed up and put on, but not bolted as I have to torque it down along with the head. I was sliding in the push rods and found that I am short one. DePratu Ford wants $40 for a set of four, and the local napa wants $6 for one, but 4 days shipping and $15 for the freight. It's hot, I was all sweaty and am now lethargic and really don't feel like going up to town again, so I'll stop and get a push rod on the way home tomorrow after work. I might have landed a side job, so I may put it on hold for another day or so.

I do want to give out a little bit of advice: When you are tearing apart an engine, make sure you put all the bolts in the same place as well as any other parts, and LABEL THEM! I spent a good 3 hours on the Ranger today, and most of that time was fiddle dicking with bolts that seemed like the right ones, but weren't and looking for parts scattered all over the damn garage..

Anyway, I will update with some pictures later. I gotta eat something since I haven't yet today, and then maybe I will look for that last push rod in a bit (doubt I'll find it).

Well, after I ate I went ahead and looked around for that push rod some more, but couldn't find it. I also couldn't find all the bolts for bolting down the valve covers. I think a trip to the junk yard is in order....

Got the push rod today, only it was the wrong one! Wasn't even CLOSE! Napa ended up having the right one, though, so I was able to get it in. Got the rockers put back on, the head all torqued up, and now I just need to go to a JY and get some valve cover bolts. Also put the drive shaft back in today.

Next week, it should be going.

My dad came home with a bunch of stuff for the Ranger today. Ended up getting all the oil and radiator fluid, as well as the bolts for the valve covers, and the best part was I didn't even ask him to do it! Depending on what's going on on Tuesday, I should have the majority of it wrapped up!

Got the valve covers "on". Dad forgot 4 bolts.

Also got the wrong kind of oil and no filter, so I'll be going to get that tomorrow. With the stash I got in the tool box, I think I have the rest of the bolts/parts to HOPEFULLY get it put back together tomorrow. Of course, I've been saying that since late May, so it could be awhile, lol.

Got the whole engine put back together. All I need is plug wires since I am missing one, and the other ones were on it when I bought the truck. Hopefully it will be fired up tomorrow!

Yeah, I know, lol. Going on 3 years now....but, when you got something else to drive that's reliable, it's kinda hard to put the money into something else. Now I need tires for the Chevy, and the Ranger is cheaper to fix then a set of summer tires so...lol.

SHE LIVES! Wasn't able to change the oil thanks to a stripped out oil pan gasket, but I checked it prior to starting her up, and she had plenty and it was still looking good, so I said "what the hell?". Built up oil pressure, and then hooked the coil pack up, and she fired right up! Then had to shut her down due to a slight (or what my uncle called MAJOR) fuel leak coming from that pesky fuel line UNDER the upper intake which resulted in pulling ALL of the top of the engine off to tighten it up.

Took her for a test drive after I pulled it out, and the temp guage quickly climbed to max, then after turning around and slowly going home, she crawled back down to normal. Just took it for another spin, and it was running beautifully and everything was staying at normal range. Then I put all the stuff from the Chevy in it, cleaned out the bed, and then parked the Chevy out in the back of the property, lol. I'll be using it for the winter, though since the Ranger was never that great of a winter truck, and I have brand new studded tires for the Chevy.

Only pic I got:

Stay tuned because I'll keep updating this thread as I do stuff to the Ranger. Next thing is probably going to be herculiner.

Well, I was bored today and figured if I'm gonna sit inside and sweat to death, I might as well be outside sweating to death faster and doing stuff. So I did a few things to the Ranger today.

Got my CB hooked back up along with the antenna back on. Went ahead and moved the mount to the other side of the truck also. Also hooked the lights up on my grille guard, but one of them is burned out (which I knew, I just didn't know which one), so I'm going to go to some places tomorrow and try to find a replacement. Also found that my radiator coolant overflow hose popped off of the reservoir due to a missing hose clamp, and since I am plum out of ones small enough for it, I'll be heading up to the parts store tomorrow to grab one. Since I got tomorrow off, I might be hitting a JY to find an explorer grille and see about getting a 5 speed. I think the Transmission is starting to go as it slips when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Also need to check out my carrier bearing on the drive line because it seems to be shaking a little bit. Anyway, here are a few pictures:

The light in action! Hooked it up to the stock fog lamp switch for now:

The bulb. Hopefully it's not outrageously expensive, otherwise I'll swap on some other lights:

And the antenna moved to the other side:

I was going to mount it on my tool box, but my mount is flipped and grounded to the box which is aluminum. I actually have an Alan mount from way back when that I may use, but either way this is a good spot for now.

Not sure what's next other than to mess with a few things. Still would like to herculine it before winter (the bed), but we'll see. I'll be uglifying it here in the next few weekends by putting my topper on so I can go camping. Would definitely like to find a fiberglass one one of these days.

Anybody know if I do a 5 speed swap if I need to get a shorter/longer driveline? I'm thinking so....but I'm not sure.

After driving it quite a bit today, I'm thinking I'll be getting a 5 speed sooner then I want to, lol. I am hoping it'll last until winter so I can keep driving it instead of the big truck, but we'll see. Gonna try some of that no slip shit and keep looking for a transmission.

Well, I got the other light working. Had to fix a light on the company truck today that ended up being a bad ground, so of course I had to check it out, and once I got a new ground, they both worked great. Also moved the antenna to the tool box mount and grounded it there as well (from the mount to the bed rail anyway).

Tomorrow I am going to try something on the oil pan plug to hopefully get it loose. Then go over my vacuum lines again to see if that will help my slippery transmission issue.
