I did the manual swap almost a year ago. lol.

When I was searching for a truck, the one that was at the top of my list was a white 01-05 Edge Supercab 4x4 with a 4.0 and an automatic. Closest thing I could find was my current truck. It had everything I wanted except for 4x4, and a 4.0. But it only had 42,000 miles, so I settled for it, knowing I could eventually swap it to 4x4 because it was an Edge.

Truck still only has 88,000 miles. Why sell it for a 150,000+ mile truck with an unknown service history?

Manual transfer case Rangers are going to probably be harder to find than converting I do believe.

Also, Fordzilla, did you also use the same trans from the vehicle that had the shifters? The trans case manual lever bolts to the side of the transmission itself, and sources tell me these M50Ds that have the threaded hole for the manual shift lever were only paired with manual transfer case Rangers.

I couldn't even find a 4x4 Ranger back when I was searching for one.

Correct. 1998-2000 4x4 M5OD's have the thread bosses, but they don't have the output shaft speed sensor hole that my truck needs. The 2001+ M5OD 4x4's have the OSS hole, but no thread bosses.

Furthermore, If I had a 4.0, I could just source a Level II M5OD and swap it in. But I have to source a 2001+ 3.0 M5OD 4x4, and then either make an adapter for the shift linkage, or find an extension housing from a Level II truck and swap it on.

If you have auto then a level 2 transfer case bolts up. Manuals don't have the right tail housing and you have to get other hard to find parts.

I think it bolts up either way. Manual or automatic. I'm pretty sure the problem is that where the shifter for the manual Tcase bolts up to is attached to the transmission itself.

That's what I was referring to. Doesn't do any good if you can't attach the linkage.

Yes. Automatic 4x4 transmissions have the thread bosses in the extension housing.

It's stupid that Ford left them in the Automatic extension housings, but not the manual extension housings.

Are you serious? I didn't think the 5R44 or 55 ever came with a manual Tcase.

Not after 97. But yep, even the newer automatics still have the thread bosses. Ford never updated the extension housing on the automatics since they didn't add an output shaft speed sensor to the extension housing like they did on the manuals.

----------

In other news, body lift has been ordered. I can hear my flares rub when I drive over inclines while turning. I maxed out my Torsion Bars to try and help it, but body lift is a top priority now.

I don't remember my 33's rubbing back when I put them on before the spindle lift, so hopefully maxing the bars out stops it until I can get the body lift on.

That's weird. You'd think with the introduction of the M50D-R1HD along with the fx4 twin stick that they would stick with the same design to cut costs.

It doesn't surprise me, Ford put 3.0's in the Ranger.

Prepping the truck for the body lift. Bed liner is out, hitch is off, jump seats are out, etc. Still need to drive the truck on Wednesday, so I can't take it all the way apart, but I'm trying to tackle stuff now so I have less to do on Thursday.
