Default $350 87 Ranger Project

Ok, well I posted some pics and things and questions that were going on with this truck in some other pages, so I figured Ill put it all in one build thread. Bought the truck initially to drive around while I turbo my civic. I am growing fond of this little guy. And for 350 bux I couldn't say no. Drove it home knowing it was running on only 3 cylinders. Got it home checked out the wiring and found a wire that must have been rubbing and broke in half. Well that made it fire on all 4's.

Ignition is all messed up. Gotta use a flathead to grab the teeth on the ignition actuator to start at the moment.

She was a dirty mess when I pulled her out

----------

So I ordered a full gasket set for the truck off ebay for only $30 shipped. Pulled the head off and found 3 light score marks in number 2 cylinder. So I pulled the piston and rod out and found this:

So in my quickness and not enough research I bought a 95 ranger 2.3 motor to find out it was the first year without the hole for distributor. So in my fury I brought to myself, I said screw it and just yanked the pistons/rods out of the 95 motor and just slapped them into the 87 motor. Being a little weary about this I said whatever its gotta work better then the old ones did.

Also added the 95 ranger aluminum oil pan. Supposedly the one that came with the truck is an 85 or 86 pan with the 4 piece gasket. No thank you. Added the 95 clutch and flywheel also cause it was in better shape.

As clean as shes gonna get:

Not too bad of an install by myself. Took about 15-20 minutes to have her sitting on the mounts.

Get her all wired up, fluids in and ready to go. I get a buzz from the starter! The bendix stopped engaging. Bought a cheapo $50 autozone starter, put it in, the bendix works but the motor wouldn't spin! Now really mad, go back to autozone, the guy gave me the next one up $75 one as a strait swap. Put her in and she fired right up.

I gotta say, she runs smooth. Idles great, doesn't leak a drop of oil. I think the valve guide seals are leaking a little though. I was just being lazy and in a rush so I didn't touch the head. But at the moment I'm definitely pleased with my purchase. As of right now I'm up to about $1000 all together with parts/engine/vehicle.

I put a cheapo aiwa head unit I had laying around in it. Wow what a wiring mess. Everytime Id put the fuse in for the dome light it would pop. P/O had the 12v constant from the truck hooked to the ground on the radio. Therefor when the fuse blew it was showing a ground.

4" dash speakers, the cones didnt want to move. With a little force and an air compressor I blew out the dust dirt and sand all in them, and guess what, they work like a champ again!

This is what Im thinking of doing behind the seat for my stereo system/ storage compartment.

Yeah, my pops got me into it "put my first engine in my 79 camaro when I was 15"

I love projects. Im always normally buying honda civics and accords w blown engines or screwed up trannys. Swapping out the engines or converting them from auto to 5 speeds.

But anywho, here's a list of everything I have done so far:

95 Pistons/Rods/ oil pan / Clutch and flywheel
Every gasket and seal on engine replaced
water pump/ thermostat
Radiator
timing belt/ tensioner pulley
idler pulley
pass motor mount
starter
Theres prob more, Im just forgetting.

Oh yeah, now theres a pinhole leak in the lower radiator hose! Grrrrr!

So I registered her yesterday. 496 bucks to do it. That kinda made me mad. But after messing with the timing a little bit I got her running pretty smooth. This truck kinda confuses me though. There is a spot on the dash for a check engine light, but the curcuits on the back does not have the spot for a bulb. So im guessing the only way to check if its good is to run it on a diagnostics scanner. I know there is probably egr problems. I need to find a solenoid with the 3 ports on it and an egr tube. But its been fun so far.

For 350 bucks thats a really clean truck. That little bit of repairing isnt nothing if it will make the truck better.
But $500 to register it? Damn, i remember my truck was only $450, but $300 of that was taxes because i bought it out of state.

Cheap! Nice work man for what it's worth. I have an '85 and I'll be restoring it this summer. Plan on it be the highlight of this year. I know what it's like to get something and have to fix it to run it...it feels great.
