Default New to this whole ford thing. 351w swap?

So i just picked up a 89 ranger yeserday its a 2.9l 5 speed dana 44 front 8.8 rear. just wanted a little truck to beat in the woods but make it home too. I usually mess with full size chevys but since a lot of my friends are pickin up jeeps small trucks i decided to grab one. This thing only has 33s on it with 4.10 gears and it is a turd. it fits 38s and that is what i would like to run but i'm afraid it wont move. my friend has a 351w tranny and tcase he just pulled out of his 95 f250 to do a cummins swap and i was wondering just how much of a pain in the ass is owuld be to drop the 351 with tranny and tcase in. or would it be easier to use the 5speed will the 5 speed even handle the 351. or is there a better cheaper route i should take?

Welcome to FRF. Is that snorkel made out of PVC? I'd look int the 8 cylinder tech section for threads on 351's. Also explorer 5.0's are easy and cheap.

351 is a tight fit but it has been done before. I would keep any of the ranger powertrain if you plan on using the 351. Use the whole setup out of the 250. As long as you can fab you will be ok. You will need motor mounts and a transmission mount to be made. This swap would also open up alot of transfercase options which is one area the ranger setup lacks greatly in.

yeah its made out of pvc. the guy i picked this up from made it. havent figured out what to do with it i might get a kit from another vehicle and make it fit. i guess i posted this in the wrong section just figurin this forum out. but what about the computer should i swap the whole set up from the f250? would this be cheaper and/or easier than doing a 4.0l swap. i'm a v8 kinda guy but this isnt supposed to be a huge project i'm just tryin to keep it on the road and beat it in the woods with out much down time for mods.

If you can get everything from the 250 then it's just a matter of making it fit, I have no clue about ease of installation though. So basically +1 what clutch said.

well since i'm a fan of the bow tie i might just throw a 383 in there and call it a day i got some fab skills i was just hopin that this would be a little less complicated swap (like chevys) so i wouldnt have to keep it torn apart for a month. i'll start a build thread soon. got a pretty good base with the d44 and 8.8. high steer, soils, and what not. next is rock slides tube bed/exo cage and switch from radius arms in front to a 4 link front and rear maybe. oh and ditch the pvc for something a little more classy(maybe break out the fiberglass). new front bumper and a winch. then hopefully i will be able to leave it alone for a little while
