What material did you use on the top of that new console? I've been wanting to make one but didn't know what I could put on the top of the console skeleton that would give it enough support and be able to bend for contours.

We call it Black and Tan board. It's used for making package trays and door panels in older cars. one side has a black "skin" on it that has a vinyl grain embossed. the other is just flat tan. it's very thin and flexible. I'm not sure where you can get it other than a local upholstery shop or supplier.

I have a ton of bracing under it. It's not strong enough to support much by itself.

Can't think of an upholstery shop in the area, have you used any other material on consoles for the top? I don't want to make one with as extreme curves as yours so I was thinking either luan plywood or a thin sheet of acrylic.

Not trying to derail your project log or anything.

here is a pic of an interior i'm doing right now. the console back there was framed the same way i did mine, but has luan for the top. if the curve isn't too major, it will work. when i did that one, i did the top in 3 pieces. also, the luan will curve going across the width, but not the length (or the other way. it'll only bend one way)

Well, in a half drunken state, I decided to start wrapping my steering wheel. I got a charcoal 04 Mustang wheel. I was told it's from a Mach 1, but as far as i know, they are a little thicker, and this one isn't. But it's in amazing shape. Anyways, I decided to wrap the spokes, airbag, and rear trim piece. I searched for several weeks for a non cruise steering wheel trim. Finally found one last weekend in the junkyard. Anyways, here is the progress. The airbag is from an 01 ranger. I pulled the emblem out in prep to recover. I might need to find a new one as i kinda damaged this one. Maybe once the material is on, it'll be ok.

and one little tab on each lower spoke that has to be trimmed. it was to hold the cruise buttons:

you shouldn't ever wrap a working airbag. this is a good airbag, but i wrecked my truck 7 years ago, deploying the airbag. never have and never will hook another one back up. will the bad still deploy, oh yeah! but it could hinder the way it's supposed to work.

back and bottom. remember, nothing is hooked down yet. that's why the back looks so narrow.

Got a new headunit and radio bezel in last night. repainted the bezel in DSG. have been looking for the silver color used on the cluster and trim. if anyone knows of a really close match, let me know!

New headunit is a Boss BV7945B In-Dash 3.6" DVD/MP3/CD. it's not top of the line, but it works for me. have a new subwoofer coming as well. can't wait to get some tunes back in there.

Old setup:

Got the last seat cover sewn up today and got the driver's side installed, ready to go in the truck. need to get out tomorrow and get the passenger side sacked. man, these seats are so comfortable! added a little extra padding to the bolsters to help build them out a little. As you can see, I ended up putting the emblem in. Glad i did. I think they would look a little plain without them. Still need to find some trim for the recline mechanism. i have a set from a mustang. need to clean them up and see if they are black or charcoal. worst case, i'll steal them from my current seats and find a replacement set later.

Tomorrow's plans are to get the other seat covered, and both installed. If i get time, I have a little something planned for the passenger side airbag cover.

now, onto the pics!
