This is turning into a nightmare. I discovered they had done nothing more than just pop the hood and "guessed" the rear timing chain is broken. Bam, gotta rip out the engine, it will cost you over 4K. I asked them, "How do you know for sure it's the timing chain by only popping the hood?" His response, "What else could it be?"

Red flag! I had it towed to the dealer I bought the truck where they at least offer a little more professional diagnosis than "we guess" or "what else could it be". The auto service shop was not happy I was waiting there in the morning with a tow truck on it's way.

That service shop has a lot of good of reviews. But there's also a number of bad reviews commenting, "overcharges and replaces parts that didn't need replaced due to a false diagnosis on their part."

Dealer service charges are outrageous but I at least know they fixed what was really broken and it's fixed correctly. There's just too many of these mom and pop service shops who stay in business by declaring any problem you have, it must be major so they can score a large invoice bill.

That is exactly why I'm very thankful that over the past 3 years of working on my Ranger I have learned enough to pretty much diagnose the issue on my own. I really hate relying on anyone else, for anything, at all.
Hope your luck changes

It's my daily driver, so I will get it fixed even if it's a big bill. Though I said earlier I planned to have no second car, I did the exact opposite. LOL. Bought me a second car, but the Ranger will remain my daily driver. Another Ford sitting in my garage right now. I never owned a convertible before....

Thanks, took a cruise in it yesterday afternoon with the top down, a bright sunny day. That was a hoot. And black, I seeked out black over the other colors. Black leather seats. To me black on black says a man's thunderbird more so than the other thunderbird colors.

I'm an after-market addict, but I really can't think of any OEM part I would replace. Maybe wheels, but I would hate to lose the thunderbird logo on the center hub. Other than the center hub though, that mag doesn't really wow me.

No word on the Ranger yet, I'm bending over and ready for the big repair bill. But the Thunderbird has been a fun distraction from that Ranger nightmare.

While I wait, I think I will show and tell a car from my past. 2003 Mustang GT, I went gonzo with the after-market goodies. Sold it to my nephew a few years ago. Other than the Flowmasters and cold air intake, it was all show and no go (relatively speaking)

Man I bet that sounded so good. As far as new Wheels on the Thunderbird, when you are looking for Wheels check the size of the cap, your caps might fit aftermarket wheels

Yea, the Mustang had a healthy growl. I didn't go with the aggressive model, more mild tone, so inside the car the sound wasn't annoying.

Update on Ranger: Dealer actually tore into it and confirmed the timing chain broke, tore a hole in the valve cover. They want even more. I don't like the idea of an engine that has had major damage internally. Looking into just buying a new engine.

Okay...I landed on a final decision. I just don't want to risk thousands in repair of that engine only for more problems to surface later. That engine served me well for 13 years, time for it to go to R.I.P.

Worked with the sales manager and service manager to put together a package deal. $8,000. Whoa!

That package includes:

New reman 4.0 V6 engine plus all new parts needed to complete the engine.
3 year service warranty

Viper Remote start system - because the TBird will be taking over my single car garage

New OEM step bars - the old ones are fairly solid, but rusted out

Financed at zero percent interest by Ford. I took a one year note, so I can pay it off quickly.

I gave them the green light, should be done in 1 - 2 weeks.

That seems like a pretty decent deal. Really sucks about all your troubles. Hopefully you feel great about the ranger again once it's all back together nice and new

Hope so. There was some negotiating involved. They originally wanted 9,000. They agreed to knock a thousand off if I went with the package deal. The biggest relief is I am now covered for three years for engine repair.

This is becoming my Ranger from Hell. Took two weeks just for the new engine to arrive. So they haven't even started yet, was told they begin the change out tomorrow and completed sometime next week.

Meanwhile, to distract from my Ranger miseries, ordered a brushed aluminum dash kit for my T-Bird. It's not the cheap vinyl with a brushed aluminum facing. It's real metal brushed aluminum.

Edit: Correction, actually the engine arrival took 8 days, not two weeks. I guess it felt like two weeks to me.
