Default 2006 FX4 Level 2 Overland Rig

As many of you know I used to have a 06 Mazda B2300 around here that I tried to make into an overland rig and for the most part did alright at it but eventually the lack of power, space and 4x4 really just got to be too much as I was craving more serious off road adventures

Here's the Mazda right before starting to strip it down
20626695_1122169451248676_5323613911513179857_o.jpg

And heres the new Ranger! It's an automatic 4.0 with only 97,000 kms on it and in overall very good shape and a way better truck already then the Mazda ever was. Having power windows, cruise control and rear cargo area for storage sure makes a night and day difference

Since then I've wasted no time with doing some modding, lucky I already have a truck with lots of parts to swap!

27746537_1233218903477063_1510424994_o.jpg
So far I've done
-33's and wheels (285/75r16 Duratracs and Pro comp 7031s)
-T bar crank and alignment(about 1.75" Crank) +2" shackles and rear bilstein 5100s(from the mazda)
-Magnaflow straight through muffler, very quiet but an awesome tone when you floor it! Plan on gutting the rear cat this weekend
-Custom swingout bumper from the Mazda
-Kenwood double din from the Mazda

The plans
-Swap G2 diff cover from the Mazda
-Paint the cap and transfer that from the Mazda
-Add a leaf to help with bumper/cap weight, even with the shackles I'm barely level as we speak
-Make a bedcage to wrap around the cap for a roof top tent
-Mount explorer roof rails and basket over cab of the truck. Got four 5" Kodiak light bars to mount to the basket during that
-Mount 21" Kodiak light bar to front bumper(doing that this weekend)
-Black headlights/clear corners and sylvania hid attitude bulbs(white halogen without being a **** blinding everyone)
-Way to many other things but these are on the agenda to do first

Why gut out the Cat?

If you were running some form of Forced induction whether mechanical or Liquid, I'd be on board but since you're not, and likely won't the slight reduction in back pressure just to give you a little more ooomph at closer to 3 digit speeds vs the overall reduction of lower end TQ losses doesn't seem applicable in an overland or offroad scenario.

Also, without any real way of "tuning" the system out properly in a way that just takes your Overland Rig into a whole other direction. The small if any benefit isn't worth the effort. Its just simply NOT that restrictive of an item. Throw your Magnaflow on there, its designed to give you the slight increase in power and TQ and tone based upon a Stock scenario, I sell MF. if you could actually see an 1-2 Hp change and any usable change in
the TQ curve on a real dyno pull let alone the ass-dyno.. it would be a miracle.

I'm not telling you what to do, i'm just pointing out some facts that you could take time, energy, and some funds and do better things with your rig and because the new closed loop systems using an AFR sensor (O2, or Lamda) to make darn sure you are wasting enough gas to keep the cat hot. without the CAT there even with MIL sensors to fake out the system you'll likely be blowing as much or more unspent fuel through the system.

I already got the magnaflow on and I'm just unimpressed with the noise from it, I'm not removing the rear cat to make more power or any of that non sense just to make some more noise, the rear cat on the 4.0 doesn't have any o2 sensors so im not concerned about it running funny after or anything like that

Eventually this truck is going to get tuned but that's in the future

So you're saying you don't like the tone of the exhaust?

I'm saying it's too quiet. Even when the muffler was off these 4.0s are loud, 3 cats will do that. So I figure removing one shouldn't make it to crazy but add some noise

Lots of updates here!
-Cap from the Mazda got transferred over
-Got a bed cage built around the cap for a smitty bilt rtt
-Explorer roof rails and the curt basket from the mazda(without extension) put on the cab
-Long leaf aal to handle the weight(Custom made from a local spring shop)
-21" kodiak double row combo bar on the bumper
-Four 5" kodiak spot bars on the basket
-Swapped rear pods for kodiak floods
-Black housings and corners with led headlights and white markers
-Swapped in front speakers from mazda(JL c2 6x8s)

Probably more but I think thats most of it
Planning on an Affordable off road bumper with a smitty bilt x20 next then some longer shocks and finish the sound system(10" sub to go in place of oem jack between jump seats, matching rear speakers and an amp for it all)

Always was a fan of your Mazda and extremely jealous of that bumper set up. Glad you are liking the FX4!

Now I am starting to miss my camper shell

Thanks! Mazda was defiantly a fun truck but this thing is so much better in every way!

Kinda liked the look without the shell but the space is just to good to give up

Went for a 1500km trip this weekend to Thunderbay Ontario, got a little squishy with 4 people in a Ranger but overall everything went smooth!

Also finally got the truck on a scale...5996 pounds with 4 people, full gas tank, full jerry/water can on the rear and the box loaded with everything

Got my new Affordable Off Road bumper on! Extremely happy with the overall amazing construction of this thing, next thing on the list will be mount the 21" bar a little differently(Too far back right now and the bar hoop is cutting off a lot of spread) and then a winch!

https://www.affordableoffroad.com/sh...per-1998-2011/

For anyone curious the bumper and oem rad skid I painted with Chassis Saver, then rock guard then clear coat to stop fading and to make easier to wash in the future and I love the texture!
