Default The Rath Camping Build.

Hey all, figured I'd keep this separate from my trucks thread so I can keep it focused on my camping setup.

in case you don't know my truck, here she is without the cap

and with the cap

Spent this past weekend cleaning the inside of the bed and cap. I also went around with caulking to seal up any leaky spots. I sealed all along the edge of the cap where it joins the bed. It's not pretty in the photo but I cleaned it up after lol.

also went around the windows both inside and out. as well as sealed up a bunch of holes in the bed from various mounting points I had previously.

I broke one of the cap clamps so that's why I'm using a wood working clamp haha. Have new ones on the way don't worry.

so here is my initial plan right now, it might, no probably will change once I actually start building it.

The giant tub of ketchup is going to be the sleeping platform. it will be made out of wood, and it will be pretty easy to remove when I want to remove it. It will have storage underneath for things like my hi-lift, shovel, axe, recovery gear etc.

The Giant pickle is my spare tire. This is the main thing I'm not sure about. I can easily mount it there and strap it down, but I also might just get a basket for the top of the cap and throw it in there.

The giant bar of butter is going to be more storage of some sort, either for tools, or maybe a spot to carry a cooler. haven't decided on that yet but it will be storage for something in that spot.

So those are the basic plans. I hope to start building things next weekend weather permitting so once that starts happening I'll post up pictures and progress. Always open to ideas and suggestions from you folks as well.

Subbed to see how this turns out because I want to go a similar route with a bed platform...

My one suggestion would be to not put the spare in the box especially if its a full size 33. Also wouldn't advise it on a roof basket either as I've heard of people having baskets get all bent and warped from the weight when bouncing around off road. I'd say when you get a front bumper built(if you're still planning on that) get a rear one built with a swingout tire carrier, it'll also give you a place to carry a water jug and gas can without having all that weight up top or smelling up your box when trying to sleep

yeah we were talking about that. I do like the swing out tire carrier idea. I had my spare strapped up inside like that for about a week and it didn't move or hit the cap at all so it can be done pretty securely.

Going to be taking measurements and buying wood during the week, i'll try and remember to post up all that stuff in case you want to use them. hopefully we can meet up at seddons this summer and do some wheeling.

so of course the weather is being stupid lately. supposed to rain all weekend again so I probably won't get much done on this. but I did finish sealing around the windows and door with silicon caulk and some weather stripping material. so hopefully the leaks are all fixed. it rained lightly today a bit and I crawled inside and there wasn't any sign of moisture but a heavy rain will be the real test. Or a garden hose.

Quick pic of the old foam seal and the new weather stripping stuff I put on.

The new stuff has multiple "ridges" in it which should help keep water out better.time will tell. also went further up with it too. can't see any daylight in between the door and the cap anymore which is a good sign.

Yeah so this weekend it's supposed to snow lol. so no progress.

smith I thought about getting a trailer too, but just figured the added cost, and hassle of having a trailer attached wasn't worth it. having it all inside the truck to me is the best way to go. but it may be different for your situation.

everyone wants to see more of my pickle

so as expected rain and snow all weekend. made zero progress but at least I got to see if the thing leaked or not after all my sealing. 99% of it worked. still getting a tad bit of water in but I can fix it and it was barely anything so I'm pretty happy with that.

buying lumber this week and so far the forecast is decent for next weekend so we'll see.

Alright, sorry for the delay. Still haven't done a damn thing lol. Lost my job in April so that kinda fucked up my plans. Working again now though so hopefully I can get this going soon. Truck badly needs new tires too, debating onc33 vs 35.
