Default 89 Ranger Sas Build Dana 30 Leaf Sprung BUDGET BUILD

Alright before I get those comments saying use the search button, ive used that button for the last month and havent gotten the answers im looking for. Its more of a matter of opinion and experience in doing SAS builds.

I just picked up a minty 89 Ranger 4.0 Swapped HD 5speed Trans. Skyjacker 4" Long arm lift. Dana 28 with blown axle shafts and gears that are probably non existant.
8.8 in the rear from an explorer with 4.10 gears was installed recently has a tight limited slip. Problem being the dana 28 is 3.73, that shit just dont matchup!

Ive been wanting to do an sas for probably the last 5 years and I never had the know how or drive to do it. Now I HAVE to since I need to be able to 4x4! DUUUUH annnnd FUCK TTB! SOLID AXLE IT... only heard that a million times. So here goes it.

Ive finally got myself together and got the resources to get it done! Currently at school for welding I find myself with an abundance of tools and hehehe... free metal. just kidding.... or am i?

I have a good friend that has a 99 XJ nicely built, locked front and rear. hes been trying to kill it so he can build his YJ on 60s, but it just dont die.

So luckily for me that means PARTS!

I know what your thinking, why am I not doing coil springs.

Well because this is a CHEAP build on a small budget, that I would like to have done before Christmas. Not 3 months from now. I dont want to have to fabricate a set of upper and lower links when i can cut some square tube and make myself some leaf hangers/perches.

Alright, so parts list.

94 YJ Dana 30 complete w/ rotors/calipers
Stock YJ Leafs
Stock Ranger Rear leaf Shackles
Leaf Hangers
Leaf Perches
Front Cross Member
Rocky Road Over-the-top Highsteer
U bolts/plates
Custom CAD delete
Track Bar Delete
f250 Shocks mounts

Extras, XJ full axle shafts for CAD delete, Spicer760x Ujoints(Same as Rubicon), Lokka auto locker, Poison Spider Diff Cover... for now

There are other things I just cant think of, ill add them later when people remind me!

Now give me some info. Im going from spring under to spring over.

width of perches on YJ axle are 32.5" from outside to outside of leaf perch.

width of a MY Ranger frame is 30.75" from outside edge to outside edge.

Would you either move the axle perches inwards 7/8" on either side to allow the hangers to sit directing beneath the frame rails or...

Fabricate leaf hangers that allow the perch width to remain the same and have the leaf hanger sitting proud on the outside edge of the frame by 7/8".

Im leaning towards just moving the axle perches in 7/8".

Thus saving myself time fabricating funky leaf hangers.

For now Ill get you all going with some pictures of my Ranger and past Bronco IIs.

looks like i cant post more then 5 photos.. ill have to make it work.

I kind of want to talk a little bit about steering. what did you guys make work on your leaf sprung axle? Ive managed to find a YJ over the top high steer kit that seems like its going to work perfectly. problem is, i have a 4" drop pitman arm... so im curious whether it will mesh right without a stock arm.

this is the kit ive grabbed. here is the link to it. http://www.rocky-road.com/yj-high-steer.html

I havent been able to find out much more info on it... its the high end kit so there arent many people who have reviewed it. most just buy a passenger side knuckle that moves the drag link above the leaves but not the tie rod.

The 5th picture on my first post shows a bent drag link that they used to use back in the day, before steering geometry became a thing. They used to cause major bump steer. Thats exactly what im trying to stay away from. Im hoping this kit will line me up nicely and give me proper steering angles.

I want you all interested. Maybe I should post what I have going into all this as far as as a dollar figure to show those that an sas can be done inexpensively and by someone who can weld, use a tape measure and understands the mechanical aspects of a vehicle. KEEP IN MIND the current lift kit that I have in the Ranger right now Retails for nearly $2000 taxes in before shipping!

Complete 94 YJ Axle hub to hub with calipers
Lokka Auto Locker
XJ AXle Shafts w/760x Joints
Poison Spider Diff Cover
4.10 Gears
Leaf Springs/Shackles
$400

Rocky Road Over the Top Highsteer Kit
250$

3"x2'x35" Rectangular Tube for front crossmember 16$

3"x3"x41" Square Tube for Hangers $20

Miscellaneous Plate for hangers, CAD Delete... Free
Friend of mine has some old fords in his yard so ill get some f250 shock towers for hopefuly some beer.

Gunna be Costly for a custom made Driveshaft but I want it Perfect, so thats about the only thing that will cost me some real coin. The rest i got great deals on. Expecting around 300$ for the driveshaft and another 200$ on some decent long travel shocks.

Have to thank my good friend Ryan for hooking me up with such an awesome deal on a parts axle thatll make it through whatever i push it into. (itll be a great daily/wheeler)

Some one point me in the right direction for some nice long travels??

Here are my my last few Bronco IIs, I wish i gave them the treatment that this Ranger is going to Recieve...! THis is the way I found the Ranger before I brought her home. she is going to come a long way in a short time. Follow the thread to find out!!
