Default Ranger Rebuild- 2 become 1

Well, as some of you have seen I did a number on my 1994 ranger spash last sunday (Feb 14, 2016). I really enjoyed this truck, and didn't want to scrap it totally, but being regular cab and with the small stepside box, and no A/C ect I couldn't justify fixing it. I can however use it to build another truck. I bought a black 1995 Ranger XLT extended cab that needs a lot of cleaning and a bit of work, my plan is to take my lift, exhaust, bull bar, and a bunch of the other things I did to my old ranger and build this new one with parts from the old one. I will me doing the work in the summer when I home and hopefully it can be ready for the next fall semester. This one has lots of options which will be nice, 4.0, electronic 4x4 (think that will be changed to manual), and a 5 speed.

The work this one will need is a lot of cleaning, some more cleaning, passenger window, something in the 4x4 (tranfercase or front diff, not sure), and some more cleaning to be driveable. Then I will be customizing it with parts from my other truck.

Bought a set of Eddie Bauer seats from an explorer today to put in the ranger, a couple tears on the one side but they were the best I could find for $250.

Picked up a cheap vinyl/leather repair kit and it should get me by for a few years I hope. Just wating on the glue to dry to do the other tears.

On another note I have decide the paint scheme I'm going to use. Keeping most of the truck stock two tone black with grey, just fixing the parts that are peeling, black canopy, grille black, front and rear bumper grey, and use the front bumper from the splash.

Interior needed a lot of cleaning so I stripped it all, pressure washed the carpet, put new fabric on the headlier, and cleaned everything else, plus new seats are going in soon.

The old headliner was in pretty bad shape

Camo turned out pretty well, first glue didn't stick so had to buy a different can, seems to be holding better this time.

Leaf spring hangers and mounts on the rear were rusted right off, almost broken on the front, it had been driver like that for a while as the underside of the box has a bit of damage, but nothing majorly structural so the boxliner will cover it all.

4 new leaf spring mounts, and the leafs from the other ranger, aal on top to act as an overload spring. undercoated the frame also so that looks much better.

The paint came in today for the grille and bumper so I should get those finished up tomorrow. Interior is ready to go in as soon as I install the headliner again (had to take it out again as the glue didn't hold). put my 33's on and they clear but come close to rubbing at a slight turn, could rub going over a bump but i think it wont be too big of a deal. Body lift blocks are all in from the other ranger. Still lots to do but lots done already also.

Ya, I didn't like the price either but around here its like $500 for any set that doesn't have any tears and the foam and electronics are good on these so I went for it. searched for 3 months and these were the best I could do. You are right that they were overpriced though.

Some of the pics tearing apart the old 94 splash:

front diff, engine, tranny, and tcase are al stored away as well as the good body panels and bumper all stored away, everything else gone to the dump now.

Box is on, most of the fluids changed, engine, tranny, front diff and tcase done, just rear diff to go. interior is back together and looks pretty good I think. finished painting the grey bumpers, and fender flares as well as a bit of touch up. Still need to touch up the black and give a wash and a wax. Next step is a deck that will go the length of the box 9" tall with sliding tool storage underneath.

Currently the back sits 3 3/4 inches higher than the front but with tools and a canopy it should sit reasonably level. I noticed I am missing a bump stop on the front so I will need to figure something out for that.

Today I spent the $31 for a one day permit to test out the truck and figure out what still needs to be fixed. Temp didn't move more than 1/8 the way past C so I think it needs a thermostat. transmission syncros don't work well in 1, 2, or R but I can get by. tires rub a little on the fenders at times, but all else seems really strong.

I made a shifter out of an old piston and connecting rod from a 3.5hp lawnmower

Some pics of my test drive trip

light mount broke too so that will need to be re-welded

So I've had the ranger insured for just under a week now. I have my ultragauge installed and really like it. Took it camping over the weeked and everything worked well until it threw a code on the ultragauge, but no check engine. P1443, replaced a couple rotten lines going to the charcoal canister and came back, replaced all the lines and see what it does tomorrow. The 12v plug doesn't give consistent power and just flickers the light on my charging dock for my radio. trying to install the other 12v plug now and see if that works. The syncros are in really bad shape and its hard to shift into 1st 2nd and R but I can live with it for now unless anyone knows a quick fix. Overall it seems pretty good, although I was surprised at the length of time my ultragauge measured for 0-60; over 15 seconds, I guess its a truck and I should expect this, just feels faster than that, lol.

Code came back but then I notice that I had bumped the plug loose while changing the hose, plugged t back in and all is good!. ordered a new 12v plug today after trying to get the old one to work and blowing 2 fuses in the process. ordered a couple fx4 and 4.0 decals.
Progress is going well on my sled deck/drybox project. frame and lock are built. need bearings and some steel for my drawers to slide, then spray the whole thing in undercoating and install.

Well I'm still fighting that p1443 code. need to test the sensor next since the solenoid tested good and I replaced all the hoses. Got my box built and it turned out pretty well.

Added lift coils to the front to keep my tires from rubbing on the fender flares.

Went for a little misadventure a couple days ago. Broke passenger side mirror, put a good dent in passenger side cab, and broke the drivers side tail light. Ordered 06+ mirrors and euro style tail lights so those will be a nice addition.

Got some new Jetco Arcticvison lights for Christmas, better distance beam but not as good of a flood beam as the 20" led light bar, but hey these are DOT approved!!

Well the 2 become one is more like 3 become 1 now. I picked up a 2004 ranger that had been rolled with only 122,000km on it to kindly donate some parts to the '95. The transmission on '95 had bad syncros, bent and worn shifter forks, a bad throw out bearing and a clutch with only 20% friction material left. 430,000 will do that to a transmission. Stole the transmission, tranfercase, steering column, one piece aluminum driveshaft, exhaust, and back window from the '04 only to change the transfercase back due to speedometer reading 5 times too fast and the steering column because the cruise didn't work. All in all took about 3 weeks to get the 04 stripped and all the parts installed and working on the '95. Hopefully the '95 is good for another 430,000km now, or at least 100,000...

New shifter stub to clear the body lift. Made from an old one cut and welded bottom on top.

The '04 to donate parts

And of course a couple pics of the '95 all shined up with a bunch of new parts

I'm jealous, I can't weld

I can appreciate putting a lot of effort into working on projects, trust me.
