Default project: Ranger Reincarnation

This is the start of my 91 Ranger build. I bought the truck for $750 as a daily driver/long term project.

The truck is a 91 std. cab short bed, 2.3 4cyl auto, 2wd, with 128k. I bought the truck with a slipping trans. so that will be the first repair, after that the fun begins!

Below is current pictures of the truck taken by the seller, and the future mod list in preliminary form.

Mods list:
rebuild and beef up current A4LD trans.
repaint in House of Kolor Cocoa Pearl PBC50
http://www.houseofkolor.com/speedsha...es_shimrin.jsp
DJM Suspension 3/4 drop (dream beams/rear flip kit)
American Racing Torque Thrust M 17x8 wheels
http://www.americanracing.com/browse_ar.asp
billet grille/explorer grille (haven't decided)
clear corners/turn signals
blacked out interior w/explorer buckets
2.3T swap (possible)

Like I said this is just beginning ideas, just a general idea of what i'm planning on. The mod list also does not include all the small surprises i will throw in along the way. Thanks for looking at by build in progress and I will keep you updated as it comes along!

Good luck! May I recommend getting a cap that doesn't wedge upward?
Btw, that's clean as hell for a 91.

today I pulled out my trans. I haven't ripped into it yet but will tomorrow.

Right now I know three things. First being the the vacuum modulator is bad due to trans fluid in the vacuum lines. Second thing being that because the modulator is bad the clutches are the problem. The third thing I know wrong is the rubber trans-mount on the tail-house cross-member is rotted and bad.

I don't anticipate there to be much wrong inside the trans other than the clutches being burnt up and possibly a seal or two. the vacuum modulator controls the shift points of the trans and when it goes it burns up the clutches because shifts are incorrect.

I'll have pics updates soon.

Thanks for looking and more to come in the near future!

thats tranny is crap. I had mine go out twice and I had under 50,000 miles on it. Mine was behind a 3.0 but still it was a junk tranny. First the shift selinod went out, then o/d clutches went. A M50D would be a better choice if you could get all the stuff to make it a manual. Other wise, get a rebuild kit for a 4.0 from what I hear and beef it up. Also I have talked to people about house of kolor paint, and they are high and hard to paint. I suggest PPG, or even crossfire paint from napa. Those are the ones I have found to be liked by many, and easy for the novice painter. Maybe your a pro though. Like the truck and good luck. I have a 92 2.3 M50D under construction to be a 2.3 turbo. I am buying a DevilBiss gun set and gonna paint it next year. What all are you planning to do to this truck?

Hey man, yea the A4LD is Junk luckily for me i'm a mechanic and actually have all the parts already at my disposal for free (my father used to own an AAMCO transmission so we have tons of parts laying around). This is the second A4LD i've done for my personal ranger, the first being for my old 4.0. What i acutally did is took the best parts parts from 3 different year trans's and built them into one super trans. I couldn't tell you exactly the years of the trans's but i kno i took the drums and clutches from one, bands from another, and i don't remember what from the third. All these parts thrown together made the best A4LD ever! the thing took abuse like few trans's could.

As far as the painting goes I personally am not a pro but my cousin has been the owner of a bodyshop for the last 20+ years and is an amazing painter (he's actually had some of his work featured in Hot Rod magazine a few times) so he will be doing the painting for me a a hugely discounted cost. He told me he didn't care what paint i picked out either he said he's "sprayed it all" lol.

My plans for the truck are as listed in my first post. but a short version is dropped, repaint, rollpan, wheels, 2.3t swap or small diesel swap, and some custom interior work. I'm very much considering making my ranger into a ULEV vehicle.

so in the last couple of days i have torn down inspected and rebuilt the trans. it is waiting to go back in and should be in tomorrow. the parts list ended up being a little more extensive than i had thought it included: all clutches and steels, vacuum modulator, both band actuator pistons, 2nd gear band, reverse drum, all 3 planetary sets, converter, and of course a rebuild kit with all seals.

trans back in tomorrow, and should be good and on the road!
