Default PLANS - Building A Canoe Rack

Building A Canoe/Ladder Carrier

I recently built a removable canoe carrier for my Ranger - Under $100 cost, and 3 hours build time. Don't let the low cost or short building time fool you - I have been using this rack now for a good while to carry my 18" Chestnut Canoe, and Kayaks and it has worked out perfectly. Detailed Build instructions >>HERE<<

Very nice job! Cheep and it works. Does it just sit in the holes in the bed?

Yes, the 4x4 posts carry the weight on the sides of the bed of the truck, the angle iron inserts only provide lateral support.. If you are concerned with these 4X4 posts scratching your paint, maybe 4"X4" Rubber "washers" under the posts would be a good idea. At the bottom of the article, I mention that a small chain with a clip would be a good idea to secure the carrier to the tie down brackets on the inside of your truck bed. (I use a bungee cord on the rare occasion I don't have something on the rack holding it down)

Seems extremely elaborate! Couple cuts of 2x4, some screws and 4 ratchet straps. 2x4s go into the slots on my bedliner.

Yes, a bit over engineered for occasional use, but I frequently carry 2 canoes, or canoes and kayaks. I do like the simplicity of your design as well.

For carrying multiple canoes and kayaks it certainly will do the trick! I applaud the design and building it yourself instead of spending tons of money on a steel rack that'd do the same
