Winch for spare in 97 2wd Ranger
2nd try. Hopefully, I'll get pics attached.
Recently bought 97 ranger, 4.0, 2wd, AT, 163k. Pretty good shape, overall. Replaced front fenders & rear bumper with salvage parts, along with adding hitch receiver.
But spare hanger was rusty & broken, so ditched it. Wanted a winch-style... so bought 98-up aftermarket winch off Amazon, and fabricated simple frame for it from mild square tubing & scrap steel in shop bin.
No good access to winch from rear, so mounted it sideways, bolting whole assembly to bottom flange of frame rails.
Ran 2' of 1" EMT tube from near winch drive angling down slightly to within a few inches of boxside, down low behind passenger-side tire.
Added a 1" hole there, with rubber grommet in it. Flattened one end of 1/2" x 36" rod, to drive winch, and brazed 19mm lug-nut to opposite end of rod.
Being angled slightly, it doesn't crank as smoothly as OEM, but it does work fine, and my spare's now out of the bed, and I can access it without excess cursing. Good enough for now..........
