Re: Sons first vehicle- 97 ranger 2.3 stick
man you sure know your rust and love rangers. Thanks for the friendly welcome to FRF. I love the rangers also but as you can see i let my blue 93 rust out. Do the 2004 models have the same weakness ?
If so can you tell me or better yet post a pick with an arrow or something where I could drill it out please ? Ok that being said i saw what you did for that old '97 and if you want to fix up Cecilia the way you did that truck ill drive her down there from up here in Michigan and give her to you

Re: Sons first vehicle- 97 ranger 2.3 stick
Great job. I would have given up on that rusty frame, but you obviously have the skills to resurrect this beast. Well done! Looks great now.
You put a ton of work into making this Ranger road worthy, and spiffy for your son. Wow. To be so lucky. Your son is also learning valuable skills,
which are WAY more important than the truck itself. Superb!
Love the '69 Mustang!
Sweetred, I think he meant the top mounts of the rear shocks are cup-like, so they trap salt/dirt/etc., and his proposed solution was to drill (say, 1/2") hole near the bottom of that mount (not the frame), just above its middle rivet, to allow captured liquid to drain from the cup. A hole about where the wire-harness passes by the shock mount in this photo: ( http://i.imgur.com/B5UVC.jpg ).

I wasn't worried about that at the time, I had other priorities...Maybe someday I will, who knows.

A lot of my friends kept telling me to "cut-my-loss", but I refused to give-up! I wasn't going to scrap my ford ranger or sell it. I had too much time and money already invested. The 1969 mustang will hopefully be the next project . My dad has wanted to see that car back on the road for many years'. As far as the "hole" that was drilled goes...There is/was a spot at the bottom of the frame behind the FRONT coil spring(s). It is shaped like a upside-down cone, and so at the bottom my dad drilled a hole (1/2 inch or 3/4 inch) there. Then flushed it out with a water/air mix.

I can't tell you much about a 2004 ford ranger. All I know is from dealing with my 3RD generation ford ranger(1994-1997 body style).
Thank you for the compliment on the work . It took about 6 months' to make my ford ranger become "road-worthy".

Re: Sons first vehicle- 97 ranger 2.3 stick
looks better after he cleaned/acid etched/filled with spray-on bedliner...
inside wasnt as bad as expected, underside pitted pretty bad, but ospho/bedliner should halt the rust for a few years.

Re: Sons first vehicle- 97 ranger 2.3 stick
he got a valance from a explorer with fog cutouts just to be a little different, painted it with bedliner, and we did some blackout on the bumper... looks better than without the valance...

Re: Sons first vehicle- 97 ranger 2.3 stick
getting ready for another winter- cab corners were blistering up, a little poking, yep, shot... went out around 2pm, popped the bed off (really glad we decided to do it- the 2 yr old fuel filler is completely rotted out already- ordered another thats a little more expensive with a 10 yr warranty), hacked some rust out- got the holes both acid etched/painted inside, and the patches welded in before dark at 8- went easier than anticipated... hopefully tomorrow will get it ground, a little filler and paint- then more bedliner sprayed up inside...
the repairs from 2013 have held up well, a few little spots of surface rust to touch up on the underside, thats about it. We did have to put a timing belt in it over the summer, pretty easy little truck to work on.

Re: Sons first vehicle- 97 ranger 2.3 stick
Hello to all y'all once again. I know its been a long time since I've posted on here, but I thought it was time for a update today...
I still have the same truck with only a few small changes made. Nothing major overall though. I added a CB-Radio into the truck and a tall whip-style antenna off the bumper and put on some different decals in my rear window. Thats it. Body condition wise and mechanically the truck is still holding up (knock on wood) so I cant complain. However I gotta be honest, after having a regular cab for this long, I'd like to find a bigger truck (hopefully diesel powered too) in the near future, but time will tell. Odds are still pretty good I'll have my ford ranger til its 100% dead as long as rust doesn't become a BIG issue. Sorry for not posting this sooner, and if this post is in the wrong place for any reason, I apologize for any inconvenience. Thanks to all y'all who have helped me with the build. God bless y'all.
