Changing transmission fluid

I have no clue if the the manual transmission fluid has ever be changed. The truck has 150k+ miles and I heard if the fluid has never been changed before and you change it, the gears may slip. Is this true?

Just like any other fluid it gets old and looses what its made of. Therefore causing gears to sometimes slip and not properly lubricate the transmission.

Remove your check level plug and see if any fluid seeps out. If not stick your pinky in there and see if fluid is only JUST below the hole.

What does it look like? Smell like? If it isn't reasonably red or smells burnt, go ahead and replace the fluid.

Remove the drain plug. Most likely there will be some fine metal shavings on the magnetic tip. Wipe those off of the tip.

Put the drain plug back in and start refilling. Again, only fill it transmission up until it slightly oozes out. Put the check plug back in and let 'er roll.

There won't be any issues unless you were about to have issues anyhow.

Yes, I would still change TX fluid. See another method (and photos) here: http://imgur.com/a/FzKcX

That refers to some automatics. Swapping the fluid on a manual won't hurt anything, providing you use the proper spec'd fluid. In fact, it may help make it easier to shift.

I guess I'll change the fluid then. Since I'm going to change it, should I switch to synthetic transmission fluid?

Not on a manual. Change the fluid. Takes 2.8 quarts. Check your OM for correct fluid

wow I was not easy getting the new fluid in. I had to wash out an old spray bottle then pour the fluid into that and spray it into the tranny. Made a mess lol

You can also take the shifter out from inside the cab and just pour it in. It's not hard to take off
