Fixed Temperature Gauge
I fixed the temperature gauge on my 1987 Ranger 2.9L. The gauge has never worked since I bought the truck last summer. I confirmed that the fuse was ok so I decided to replace the following parts.
* Temperature Sending Unit * Temperature Sensor * Thermostat I don't know which of these parts was the culprit but since I had to remove the thermostat housing in order to reach the sensor and sending unit, I decided to replace the stat while I was in there. See picture number 3 for the location of the sensors indicated by the red arrows. The total cost in parts for this project was around $45.00 and it took me around 2 hours to complete cause I did not have a big enough open-end wrench and had to go look for one. Oh, I also broke the fragile green and red vacum hoses, so I had to buy some tubing and repair the lines. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...%20Gauge/1.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...%20Gauge/2.jpg Arrows indicate the Sending Unit and Sensor. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...%20Gauge/3.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...%20Gauge/4.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...%20Gauge/5.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...%20Gauge/6.jpg |

Good job with the pics, often finding the parts that you need to work on can be the hardest part of the job!

Re: Fixed Temperature Gauge
What ever happened to the day when auto manufactures just plopped the thermostat on top of the engine? I worked on a Blazer once and when you removed the radiator cap ,there sat the thermostat, just pull it out and replace. I replaced mine in the ranger the other day and it is hidden under the throttlebody.

Re: Fixed Temperature Gauge
Putting it on the top of the radiator cap would not work. It would get no circulation to tell it what the water temperature is while it is closed. The engine would overheat immediately.

Re: Fixed Temperature Gauge
Right..I don't know of anything that would work on top of the radiator cap..that's why they put it in the filler neck under the cap.
